    Really? I'm shocked.
Obama is a good fella, but he really didn't do anything to deserve it yet, in my opinion.
I also think that the Nobel peace prize should not be given every year but only once in a couple of years, when a personal exists who really deserves it. They just pick somebody because they have to pick somebody.
For me, after Yassir Arafat got the prize (with Israeli PM Rabin and minister Peres), I consider the prize to be a joke.

Obama is clearly making an effort to... calm the seas between many countries IMO. With his call to reduce nukes and his apologies for what he feels the US has done wrong. I would say his push to end the wars, but that's been just talk so far. He has neither pushed to get our troops home, nor pushed to send more troops to get it over with through a win.

Now, whether his effort means much, could really lead to any peace, or comes at a cost, that's another debate. As far as him getting the Noble Peace Prize, sure why not... after looking at some of the others that have got it he's a better fit than past choices. But of course I think the award is a joke and has been for many years.

Asked why the prize had been awarded to Mr Obama less than a year after he took office, Nobel Committee head Thorbjoern Jagland said: "It was because we would like to support what he is trying to achieve".

This is great! It's so wonderful to have a President that the world respects.

It's great to have a President that seeks to spread peace and who shows respect to other nations rather than some ignorant arrogant cowboy who shoots first and asks questions later.

This is encouragement from the international community. They want us to know that they are on President Obama's side.

Exactly! The international community is on our President's side instead of fighting against him. What a beautiful CHANGE!

One of the things out there right now is that the deadline for entry was Feb 1st. So did they judge him the winner off his work up to Feb 1st like some are saying? Or is it that you nominate and they then watch the person for a few months to decide? He had been in office 10 days.

My only concern is whether this gives Obama a "free pass" as far as continuing (and even expanding) the war in Afghanistan.

Continuing that war is crazy. We'll be there forever. And for what purpose? In reality terrorists can pop up anywhere, anytime. I'm personally much more concerned about homegrown right wing terrorists (I think we have more McVeighs out there) than I am about some guys in Afghanistan.

The Nobel Peace Prize became a joke when they gave it to Arafat.

This 'award' to Obama only furthers to make a mockery of the Nobel Peace Prize.

    Well, you are an idiot.

The GOP has really become an Anti-American party.

Great press release from the DNC:

The Republican Party has thrown in its lot with the terrorists — the Taliban and Hamas this morning — in criticizing the President for receiving the Nobel Peace prize. Republicans cheered when America failed to land the Olympics and now they are criticizing the President of the United States for receiving the Nobel Peace prize — an award he did not seek but that is nonetheless an honor in which every American can take great pride — unless of course you are the Republican Party.

Everything Obama does, gets, touches gets politicized. The Olympic thing now the Nobel thing.

Frankly, I think he is now on a winning streak. I predict he will win the Heisman, an emmy, an oscar, a trip to disneyworld after the superbowl, and probably 2009 Playmate of the Year.

I also suspect he will win Bingo every Thursday night at the Smallville, Kansas YMCA.

ROFL, he shoulda ran for President of Iran against Ahmadi Nejad so he could hold both US President and President of Iran @ the same time. Imagine the peace possibilities ;)

By the right wing. These are things that really shouldn't be politicized. They should be "country first" things. But these people have really proven that they don't give a damn about this country or it's people. Which is why it's time to leave them behind for good.

No wonder, Europeans are happy to see how Obama slowly diminishes the US's political and economical influence on the world stage and launches the US economy into further turmoil.
