Number of pages and SEO

Do the number of page in a site matter for good rankings?

I.e. if Site A has about 20 pages with a page on “dog training” and Site B only consist of one page about “dog training”, which will rank better with the same amount of SEO done to both?

    Thanks again guys ;)

The more pages, the more keywords, the more engine results.

All are saying the 20 pages site, could some please specify why?

Interlinking is obviously a big part, but is there any other reason?

I am just talking about ranking for the keyword phrase “dog training”.

because you will have more internal links pointing to the main pages with your keyword in the anchor text.

for e.g. a navigational breadcrumb menu for a page on dog training in a sub-directory called training could look like this.

dog training home > dog training articles > how to train a dog

Technically speaking, search engines rank pages, not sites. For a one-page site, this is obviously one and the same, but for a 20-page site, it's not. What you'd really need to do is compare an individual page of the 20-page site with the one-page site, to make an accurate determination. Overall, I agree that the 20-page site would provide you with more opportunities to maximize rankings for a given page, but off-page factors (i.e. backlinks, anchor text, etc.) would probably play a much larger role.

I agree. Larger sites always seem to rank better than smaller sites. I don't actually believe that it's the larger site factor in itself that makes is ranks better. Simply the site has more opportunities to add to it's IBL count through internal link structure. It's also worth noting that older sites are reputed to rank better, older sites 'tend' to be bigger.

My thinking is that it would depend on the amount of SEO done. For example, let's say both the 1-page site and the 20-page have 5,000 backlinks each, with the same anchor text, on the same type, pagerank and trustrank level pages, I don't believe the extra 20 internal links would have that much of an advantage for the 20 page site.

On the other hand, reduce the 5,000 backlinks number to 200, then it probably would have more of an effect.

Its not about the no. of pages a website has but the amount of quality content and good inbound links it has.
