I know many people prefer to only target 2 - 3 keyword phrases per page, but what do you do if your page is relevant for dozens of keyword phrases? We could create a page to target each of those phrases, but it would be quite tedious to get sufficient backlinks to each of those pages. So for several months now I have been using our homepage to target 10 - 15 different phrases. We are now first page or top of page #2 for those keywords. It is getting tougher to move those rankings up and I'm starting to wonder if my strategy is holding us back. Is it possible to achieve top 3 rankings for 1 page for so many keywords? Do you think Google looks at what percent of links has each keyword? What would you do in this situation?
I don't think google will lock any kind of promotion. I think it's much harder for you to get linkbacks with necessary keywords to the same page, besides haveing more pages you'll have, let's say, larger room to operate, as I think google looks how big is your site, how many indexed pages does it have, etc..
Vansterdam, i really really like the way you started that project.... but i must say, its probably holding you back now, since you could have had alot more backlinks for just 3 keyphrases. but here is the exciting news... if you continue this journey they way you do now. and rank well for all 10-15 key phrases then your in.. imaging being on #1 for 10 key phrases :O
We do have plenty of pages, but there are many general keywords to describe the products & services that we offer. It is tough to know whether a person is more likely to buy when they search for X compared to searching for Y. So we are being a bit greedy and we're trying to rank well for all of those general terms. I'm sure if we just concentrated on 3 phrases we'd be #1 or #2 for those phrases by now, but that would still be less traffic than slightly lower rankings for 10 - 15 phrases. I was just wondering if other people were able to achieve top 3 for this many keywords with 1 page. Obviously I can't fit those 10 - 15 phrases in the title & meta description and that gives us a disadvantage for some of those keywords. I'm hoping that enough backlinks with these anchor texts will outweigh the onpage factors. What does everyone else think?
only if those 10 key phrases are popular searches I am number 1 for many key phrases but it is the popular ones that you want to get and stay at.
Yes we are only concentrating on keywords with a decent amount of search volume. If they were low volume, we would be top 3 for all of them already.
It's going to depend on the purpose of the page and the types of keywords you're targeting (primary, secondary, tertiary - aka "long tail"). You said this is a home page, so naturally you're going to want to rank well for the general keywords (well, the ones that bring you qualified traffic you can convert easily). If you don't mind me asking, what's the site?
I would say all of my homepage target keyword phrases are primary keywords. Dan, I have sent a PM with my url. Thanks for any help you can provide.
I would start to target some of your inner pages with some of the keywords also not just your home page. Its better to have 20 entry pages than just use your home page it also looks more natural.
I have never tried it but it is not be impossible get more and more backlinks with those keywords in anchor tag and optimize the page perfectly for those three keywords. I think it will work. best of luck buddy.
