I wondered if anybody knows if the number of indexed pages tends to influence ranking on specific keywords. Where original content and reguarly updated content influence rankings, I'm wondering if the number of pages on a site can influence specific keywords and/or overall ranking ? input appreciated
If you rank good in search results, and add content regularly, then google will index more pages from your sites. But I suggest you do not concentrate on the index pages, instead add content and build backlinks.
Regularly updated and original content definitely has an impact on rankings. If you were trying to rank well for "stock trading" for example (and your site centered around finance) you may want to create a subsection or category called /stock-trading/ where in there were new, fresh articles related to that topic.
thanks for your replies. my question was however - does the NUMBER of indexed pages influence ranking?
I have heard that Google prefers bigger sites with more pages. The theory goes that Google like to gives searchers the best information and more pages = more information. So the more pages in your site the better your homepage might rank - taking into account other factors like the content of the pages and linking strategy within the site.
Yes the bigger the sites, the higher the internal link weight ... so it helps for rankings too (by how much, only search engine know ... maybe minimal)
