I would say Google 10k - 20k servers just to handle web content. Lets say 1Billion searches a day. / 20,000 servers = 50K searches p/server. hehehe
Yes, it is an overhead, but google is a multi Billion dollar company. So long as you make more money then it costs to run the company you make a profit. Overall very interesting info. Thanks for all of the info guys. MAtt
I don't know any workers but I see job openings for the data centers regularly. The servers are "self provisioning". The same data is stored on several servers for redundancy. If one goes down it can be replaced with a new (empty) one which receives it's tasks from the network (probably store/serve data with the least redundancy). I've read in a interview a while ago that the operator just has to replace the box and the rest goes fully automatic.
I'm sure they have real people, but robots are commonly used for repetitive tasks in industrial settings. It's not as far off as you might think.
500K of servers is very impressive. I have been at the datacenter in San Jose and saw 5K Google's servers. I don't know what they are used for, all servers were locked and had the Google stickers on. Looked very sweet.
One ip must be representing many servers, 500.000/700 = 714 servers in my rough and simple calculation?
