    Hi,

GOAL: Choosing the right keyword to get on the 1st Google page
OPTION 1: Choosing keyword with many Google results (like 15 000 000) but on SERP page there are websites with low PR (0-2), no keyword in domain address, title and description.
OPTION 2: Choosing keyword with lower number of Google results (like 800 000) but on SERP page there might be also websites with higher PR (2+), keyword in domain address or title.

Which option would you go for with a new website and why?

And bonus question: Do you think it is possible to beat others on SERP page with only one well written and on-page seo optimized article?

    Hi Dieorfly,

The number of results isn't very important. You want to get onto page 1 in the SERPs, so it's those sites on page one that you need to be looking at (it also helps to look at page 2). If you can't beat them, then you won't be on page 1 and it doesn't really matter if you beat out 100 other pages or a 1,000,000 pages to to page 2 or 3, you're still not on page 1. So, focus on the quality and authority of the pages in the first page or two and ignore the number of results. (Quite frankly, a lot of the pages in Google's hundreds of thousands of results for any particular keyword aren't relevant anyway.)

It's possible. As to how likely it is depends on the competition. One well written and optimized page may get me ranked in the top 10 for "the best liver and cheese sandwich", but it won't for "iPad".

Since you have a new site, you don't have any authority yet. So, don't expect to rank well for many keywords at first, no matter how well written or optimized the page you create is. On-page SEO can only get you so far, you have to build authority to your site to rank well for keywords that have decent competition.

An analogy would be like having a 10 yr old scrawny kid vs a 25 yr old who's been working out for years. In a weightlifting competition, if the 10 yr old has perfect technique, he may be able to lift more than you'd expect, but he still won't be able to out lift 25 yr old who'd been working out for years...even if the 25 yr old has poor technique.

So, if you're going for keywords with competition that has been around for years and has built up authority to their site/pages, then even if they aren't well optimized, you still probably won't be able to beat them unless you build up the authority to your own site.
