    Also a maximum of 3 ad units and 3 link units can be placed+2 search boxes

    Total=8

    I would advise to keep a minimum of only 4 google adsense units(including search box,ad units,link units)

    I think you can now have 3 link units on a single page. I think they've done this because some people get betetr CTR with link units than with traditinal ads. This gives them the opportunity to increase their CTR further.

    you can use 3 link units but in my experience it's better to use one ads unit and one link unit on one page
