    Hi All,

I am thinking of buying a new computer. However, I am struggle in deciding which way to go. Notebook or Desktop. Since the prices are so close to each other now. A notebook has its portabilily advantage and a desktop has its resistance to heat (not quite sure now) I will be using mainly in designing webpages.

I would like to hear from everybody.

    Thanks in advance. :)

You can get a decent barebones desktop online now for like 300$...

It also mainly depends how you'll use it.. Do you move around alot or are you stationary mainly... That should be a deciding factor.

Thanks for your recommendation, I don't move a lot. If I get the barebones, would you go either intel or amd?

Desktop all the way unless you MUST (and i Mean MUST) have portability

Desktops are about 1/2 - 1/8 the price and a lot more powerful

AMD/Intel/Barebones etc all depends o nprice range and use of the PC.

You should be buying a dual core processor. There is no point looking at the really cheap stuff out there. You will soon wish you had doubled your budget and bought a better machine. The new minimum:

    1 - dual-core processor -- whether AMD or Intel
2 - one gig of RAM
    3 - network interface card
    4 - on board sound
5 - on board video for work -- video card if for play
    6 - dvd writer
    7 - 17 inch lcd monitor -- I would go for a 19 inch

You can get such a beast from Dell for under a $1000.

I would avoid a laptop unless space was a major issue and you need portability. There have been two high profile battery recalls -- the Apple one came only after many months of complaints -- which underscore the fact there remain issues with laptops.

even at home i use my laptop much more than the desktop.
if you are not much into gaming then go for a laptop.

Haha new bear minimum = 10 step above and beyond nay crap from Dell, especially if your looking to buy reasonable prices :)

Also Dual core has VERY limited worth for mainstream use, it is not even close to being a new minimum, it is barely worthwhile (except for specific occasions)

If it is for home use, and even if gaming is not important then DESKTOP is still the way to go.

For home use their is really VERY little reason to pick a laptop instead of desktop. The reasons for both are listed below.

    Desktop Pro's
    • Cheaper (by a HUGE difference)
    • More Powerful
    • Easier to upgrade
    • Easier to customize
    • More comfortable to work with

    Laptop Pro's
    • Portable

So yeah if it is for home use, kind of an easy guess?

Yes, I will definetely agree to go for a Desktop for a home use, because you can get a larger monitor.

However, what do you think of a notebook with docking station??

    Thanks

Then I think all the Pro's still count.

So why would adding a docking station suddenly make :

Laptops even rmeotely close to the same price as a Desktop
    Laptops as powerful as Desktops
    Laptops easier to upgrade
    Laptops easier to customize
    ??

Simply adding a docking station changes none of these facts.

If you like to work outside or you travel frequently you should buy a notebook. Otherwise you should buy a desktop. This way of thinking helps you to decide easily.
If you don't want to get confused you should not compare costs and tehnical details.

    Scan.co.uk
Ebuyer.com (nothing to do with Ebay)
    Ebay.com

If your bulding it yourself (highly reccomendd for many reasons) buy parts from any retailer, just make sure they have good prices and your specs are compatable.

I prefer to buy a computer from a retailer shop not from internet. But I visited some websites of computer brands to get information about technical and price details before I went to the shop. You may get information about dell http://dell.com or any other brand which you like.

Im just presuming a few things here but seeing as your on a forum which deals with a lot of differents elements of media such as web design, graphics design, and just general design and development im guessing you will be using many programs such as photoshop, dreamweaver, illustrator etc. Well, if this is the case wouldnt it be wise to buy a machine that offers you speed, multi-tasking capabillities, realiability, plenty of hard drive etc. So, if this is the case then you should idealy be buying an apple mac which is designed to handle multiple media tasks. However, if these are out of your price range an intel duo with 1gb of ram for £550 would fit the bill perfectly. A laptop wont cut it for power and multi- tasking unless you are willing to spend way over £800.

But, maybe im just presuming a few things there.
