Well, it's up to the rest of the site and the kind of content you link. Moreover, you should not try to stay on a "sensible" page, I mean pages with high competition that are often subject of spam, i.e. definition of loan, mortgage, pharmacy, etc. just my $0.02 :)

It doesn't depend on what YOU call spamming.. They're calling the shots :)

Wikipedia is not supposed to be an original source of information in its own right, so much as a place that references other authoritative sources. So by failing to acknowledge a source, they are effectively taking something without giving back anything in return. If this happens in a specific case related to one of your pages, you shouldn't take it lying down. Go back and add a direct link to your source, because if you invested in creating the original material, then it's only right.

You learn something new everyday because this is all new to me. I just assumed that they would use “no_follow” attribute to prevent spamming. I guess I was wrong :D

A the nofollow attribute was designed for use when a site doesn't want to 'vote' for the site they are linking to. Wikipedia is exactly the site that should NOT use nofollow.

If a link has been judged good enough to be on wikipedia then thats a pretty powerful editorial vote IMO.

That's where you're both right and wrong. A link in Wikipedia does not HAVE to have gone through any editorial process to get in there. However, if a link in those pages has existed for several months, it can be considered as a pretty decent link on the subject. However as it now works, Wikipedia is spidered an awful lot, and it's one of the first links you'll see appearing in your backlinks when you've added a dozen... So, no editor has to be involved, which makes it the PERFECT place for a spammer. I would wish a link would only count when it had been on the page for 6 months or so.

Well google gives more weight to links as they get older so I expect they can ignore links if they disappear within a few weeks.

I added a link to a review of a game on a page with no ads... it got removed whereas another link to a site that was selling the game and was filled with ads stayed... Its kinda funny :p

True, but it's a heck of a way to get your pages spidered...

Wikipedia, DMOZ, HEDIR... they all have the same common problem, their reviewers.
