I have a new website and have been working on adding a number of links to it. I have a good number so far but when I go to the google webmaster page it shows no backlinks for the site.

How long does it take for links to show up? Some of them are weeks old.

If your looking in webmaster tools it will take a while for them to show up. Google only updates them every 2 weeks to up to 2 months sometimes. If your looking at link:www.yoursite.com I have only had mine updated there 2 times in the last 2 years.
Google does not do very good at showing the amount of inbound links. I have over 17,000 for one site but webmaster tools only show 880. Try doing a search for "check backlinks" iwebtools.com give you a better idea of how many you have.
You could click on the directory link in my sig then click on SEO tools in the top nav bar to find a backlink checker.

In the wemaster tool itself u can see the updated date. Its not updating always some time its taking months. Your site is new keep link building until get some good result and also before u make BL also make sure that the link is with dofollow or not with nofollow. If so no value for SE it will not index

Google Shows only a small number of the incoming links

For example, a backlink search for my website on MSN shows my 100 backlinks where as Google shows only 1

It's completely depends on the authority of the site where you have submitted your site. If you are getting a backlink from an authoritative site then obviously it will show up in the webmaster tools. Any how Google webmastertools won't give exactly the complete backlinks list.

It takes some time to show up in Google. You can check backlinks to your website with Yahoo Site Explorer.

There is always a huge difference between the number of inbound links to your site that Google shows compared to for example what Yahoo shows. One reason or another, Google always shows just a fraction compared to Yahoo. Add your site to https://siteexplorer.search.yahoo.com to see all the links as Yahoo would show a much more correct number than Google would.
