Promoting your site is very important. Not promoting your site is like buying a car and not driving it.

    Hey all,

I think i have to agree with most people here. I am in the process of building a website, not for adsense or affiliate links or anything like that. It is going to be a service.

So i am thinking well if I would like this to be a success ( which is the plan ) then i am going to have to promote this thing like there is no tommorow. Not just SEO, or bookmarking or what ever, But everything that is availiable to me to get the word out there.

LIke anything if you put in the work right the first time you will reap the rewards. However if you do not offer anything that is substantial enough for people to use, then really your screwed :p

Finding a good mimx od promotion and good product and or service. You can promote something until the cows come home, but if it usless all that traffic will not give you anything.

THe key is finding the right balance and really experiment at the end of the day.

    Good luck to all!

Depends on a lot of factors. I get plenty of referral traffic from Stumble Upon, mostly for my night photos. I do marketing, too, to get more traffic that I have some control over, but if you put together useful, high quality content, and get it in front of the right few sets of eyes, you can get by on word-of-mouth.

If you're not using Google Analytics, you should be; it's free, and gives you a wealth of information. By virtue of running as jscript it filters 'bot traffic out of the picture, then helps you figure out which referral sources, keywords, and other things are helpful and which aren't.

Promoting or marketing your site is a must to reach its full potential. But the man who invented modern advertising said "Half the money I spend on ads is wasted. If I only knew which half?" There's plenty of marketing you can do that will have no effect, and there's a lot you can do to hurt your reputation. Finally, your time is of course valuable. So you have to strike the right balance.

I'm curious as to how one promotes a site besides search engines? Posts on forums and such?

I've never promoted any of the sites in my sig and It get ALL 100% SE traffic.
I've never updated the sites and theyre are about 2 months old. I just bought a domain name added some contect and uploaded it to my server. so far this month I'm only a few dollars shy of $100 in adsense. My fist site I'v ever created (that's why it looks bad in FF)
I have been thinking of submitting them to SE and directories since I havent done that yet.

BTW I did order some stumbles on one of those site a few days ago and nothing more!

Yes, and submit to directories. Announce your site, advertise it, get listed in a few high traffic well known web directories and advertise, submit.

Did I say advertise and submit?

It happened with me. I have few sites, which i never promoted yet it is constantly getting popular and i get more and more visitors everyday. Although money making is not exactly my intention, i just wanted to provide people something free and useful.

Some of the examples of my sites which i hardly promote are

    http://best-php-scripts.com
    http://mysql-apache-php.com
    http://quick-name-generator.com

I completely agree that without promotion i am undermining the potential of site.

Great quote! Infact thats what is for real with me. I have car, know to drive but i dont like driving car. I dont know why?
