Not owning the DOT com hurt me (Using dot net)

There are a few names I am thinking of buying and a good majority of them have basic spam pages listed on the .com portion of the name.

For these the .net version is available. Will choosing a .net significantly hurt the traffic to my potential site?

I am interested in starting a indie music / movie related forum (not a business). You think it will be alright? Or should I try to come up with a .com name?

Most people affirm that .com or .net doesnt really matter for search engines but its just human beings are more used to typing .COM domains then .net or . info

Considering I will most likely have little type in traffic I think you guys answered my question.

You think it would hurt the resell value later? Does google weigh .net's over .com's of the .net seems to be generating more content?

Thanks for the fast info. I think I will try it out ... if it really takes off I could probably just buy the .com ...

The sites are probably for sale. Why don't you make an offer of $20-50? What they do not mention is that the com also helps with e-mail if you want to have any kind of feedback. Sending a .net is not intuitive to people, advertisers, etc... .Nets are also worth less because people don't trust them as much as .com when they do see them in search results. Oh, and if you develop a nice site on a .net, your .com is going to be worth 10x more than it is now and you will have to pay for it. Go for the .com.

People generally think .com's are mre valuable but tbh its not the ending that matters its all about the site itself, like traffic, content etc. a domain name can easily be changed once brought.

.net domains will always lose lots of traffic to .coms. Case in point: we have the .com of a fairly popular .net site (Alexa < 10,000) and it gets lots of traffic (thousands per month), not just type-ins but also many, many links that were mistakenly placed to the .com by people who didn't know better. If you can, get the .com.
