    Hi,

Is it normal that my website is still not listed at DMOZ/ODP after a few months?
I've suggested my URL 3 months ago.

How can I see if my website was rejected?

    Grtz

Good advice, there is nothing more that you can do. You cannot bribe your way in, that gets a life-time ban even offering an editor a bribe. You cannot speed up the process and it depends on when an editor gets aound to that category and site.

I tell a lie, there is one way, you could become an editor for the category that you offered your site to. You can even use your site as one of the three that will berequired from you if you apply. Just one rule about your own site, don't treat it differently from anyone elses. We need more editors, we are all volunteers, just a few staff get paid, that's why sometimes sites wait a while before they get reviewed for listing or sometimes being rejected. And, sorry, before you ask you would not be tiold if your site had been rejected.

Offer a good quality site that is not overly infected with ads and that has original content that truly holds an interest to the end user. Then submit it to the most fitting category complete with a rather drab, but accurate description.

Now pray...unless you don't believe in god, in which case, apply to be come an editor yourself ;)

What editors attempt to do with a description, is to speak to the web surfer as if you were sitting face to face with him.

The two things we want to tell him is what is this site, (a car dealership, a fishing boat charter, a manufacturer of blue widgets), and the second thing is what could the surfer find on the site if they went there, ( an explanation of the manufacturing process, company profile, local community information, list of models, pricing, features).

When a surfer is faced with 30 sites, they want to have an idea of what they'll find, instead of clicking on each one of them. If they're looking for red widgets, why would they want to go to a blue widget site. So our purpose is to describe it to them factually, and let them make the decision.

A description is not an advertisement in a newspaper. "Greatest prices on earth! Friendly service! Low, low prices! Free delivery!"

Also, a list of keywords that you might use for a search engine isn't helpful, "Tires, repair, car, automobile, body shop, rental, service." It just doesn't read well, or make a good description.

That tells the surfer nothing about the site itself, and that's what we're concerned with. We're only looking at the content on the site, nothing else. We don't compare one company to another and make a decision about which is worthy and which isn't, or how sophisticated the site design is.

There are editors who are truely gifted in writing interesting descriptions, and there are guys like me who just have to concentrate on giving the facts. In either case, there are certain guidelines we have to work within, and we're limited to two or three sentences, :).

Let's me know what category you submitted your URL to. I may be able to tell you how many URLs are on the waiting list.

I don't think that would really help a lot as many site suggestions are submitted to the wrong category to begin with (more as wishful thinking) and we spend a lot of our time moving them to where they really belong.

So, there may be 5 site suggestions currently waiting in a category, but there may be 100 more sitting in higher categories that will eventually be moved down to that category or moved sideways from other parts of the Directory. :)

And the site in question may be in the wrong category and have to be moved itself.

As an example, in the Regional section of the Directory, most sites belong at the locality/city level because we place sites by their physical location.

Many site owners figure that if their site is listed in the nearest large city, the County, Metro, Region, or State level, they'll get more exposure (like a newspaper ad) which is false, so we end up moving them down to the locality level where they must and will be listed.

Don't worry if you live in little Podunk City, the search engines will still pick you up, I don't think location really matters to a search engine.

So, if you want to help us speed up the process, in the Regional section of the Directory, please submit your site suggestion to the locality/city that you are actually located in, and we can spend more time reviewing sites, instead of moving them, :).

Also, please do your best to write a compliant description, you can find that info in our Help section, and you can get an idea of what we'd like by viewing the current listings and their descriptions, in the category you're suggesting to. That also speeds up the process tremendously.

There's no reason why you can't assist us and yourselves at the same time, and it's very appreciated.

This is normal my friend. 3 months is no time at all for DMOZ listing to be approved. It may be approved in the first week or never at all. Two of our websites are not listed even after 2 years. What can we say now...?

The Directory is very selective and no site has a right to be listed, but you can determine the type of sites we don't list by reading our Guidelines in the Directories Help section.

If your site is one of those, nothing you can do will ever qualify you. If it isn't one of those, the criteria all editors use in determining if a site has the unique content we look for is right out in the open.

Nothing is hidden, the very same Guidelines every editor uses, is openly available to the public. But, the most common reason a site suggestion hasn't been listed is much less sinister, it just hasn't been looked at yet.

I know it's frustrating, but the alternative is to have your good site buried in a mountain of spam sites.

Some site suggestions get listed the same day, and others may take a year or more. It depends on how many editors are working in an area, how many suggestions might be waiting, and how much free time an editor has to give, and which site suggestions he gets to in that session.

Editors do this in their spare time, and have RL jobs and families, :), and as volunteers we're not obligated to do anything at all, if we don't want to.

Unless they are "senior" editors and editing in DMOZ is part of their job. Getting links for their own one page web sites and selling links in disguise of "SEO". :)

I did that, and now I have editors that call me self serving. So that route is kind of a catch22 don't ya think? It's plastered all over the forums here, which I'd guess would be kind of a deterrent to any new editor applicants.

Naah, your situation doesn't damage everyone that uses their site as one of their first 3. Your problem was that the app represented exactly half the sites you EVER added. If you're gonna make it an example, tell it right.

I was well within the guidelines of the directory, am I wrong?

Will you call Skrenta self serving as well? My listing of sites certainly has a better ratio of affiliated listings to non-affiliates then his. So go on, say I did something worse then what the founder of the directory did, and is doing, then explain how *I* am the one that's in the wrong.

Go on, explain how me listing one in six is some how worse then his 10,000 plus listings for a SINGLE domain.

See how they feel about listing your own site webmasterplace?

You don't get any argument from Skrenta that he is self serving, he even admits to DMOZ being corrupt to the core. :D
