Not getting this... (AdWords)

Bid $0.25 on "tom friedman" (author of The World is Flat)

    Today's Stats: 6 clicks/163 impressions/3.6% CTR
    All-Time Stats: 6 clicks/446 impressions/1.3% CTR

The keyword is now inactive. Googs wants $0.30 to reactivate it.

There are only two other active advertisers as far as I can tell.

Now I know Google does crazy stuff so I'm not miffed, I just am trying to figure how they do stuff so I can figure out how (or whether) to scale up our campaigns. So for the first 300 impressions or so no one clicked. I could see if it would have been deactivated after that. But it stayed active and I got a good CTR today. Yet it gets deactivated.

Is it that deactivations don't happen in real time and by the time Mr. Deactivate came around the increased CTR didn't matter?

It might just be anecdotal but it feels to me like for some keywords if you're getting a good CTR Google is asking to increase the minimum bid. If you're an advertiser you probably would because presumably the ad is working. But isn't this the opposite of the way it should work. Shouldn't you have to pay less for better-performing keywords?

Based on the lack of responses I'm guessing that no one else gets this either? :D

What type of matching are you using? How long (total) was your ad running? Were you testing multiple ads? Using the content network or search network only?

I activated that word in my account for $0.05 (paid $0.04 per click) yesterday when I read this post and it was still active as of this morning when I turned it off.

So I checked just now and the phrase has been re-activated (I didn't change the max CPC or anything else about the ad). Is that normal?

    To answer your questions...

    I'm using broad matching.

The ad is relatively new (less than a week old).

I am advertising on multiple phrases but have the same ad for each. I do have a number of other ad groups going.

I using the search network and the content network.

FWIW, here is my ad text:

    The World Is Flat Audio
    Listen to Thomas Friedman's Book
on CD, Cassette and MP3 Download
    www dot LearnOutLoud dot com
(can't post actual URL yet :))

    Any thoughts?

Yea, it's normal. Look at the bottom of your ad group and you'll see this:

I'm a big fan of exact matching and limiting keywords per ad group - you can better target your ads that way IMO.

When I'm using broad match I always tinker with dynamic keyword insertion. (the post at the other side of that link is a little more geared to forums but should get you going in the right direction.)
