    Hi all,

I am trying to verify one of my site for googles webmasters tool, but am not able to do so. I have used both the option i.e. uploading a html file and also the metatag. if i upload the page i get the message saying "We've detected that your 404 (file not found) error page returns a status of 200 (Success) in the header."
i dont know how/where to edit this page so that it will send the regular 404 message.

and am not able to put the meta tag between first <head> and <body> of my index page. it just skips from there and goes to line after <body>

However, i was successful in doing so on my other website with both the methods.

    Please help.

Set it on your domain control panel provided by your web host.
What Google wants is that when they request for a page that does not exists in your site, they want a 404 error message but some web host set 200 success as the default. 200 Success means if a page is not found, it will return to the main index page.

Set it back to 404 error using domain control panel

This doesn't make any sense. You aren't able to edit your index page? Are you using some sort of CMS? a wysiwyg? I don't get it.

Do not waste your time figuring out the meta tag.
    Upload the html file.
Go to your domain control panel
    Go to Redirect icon
Change it back to 404 error
Try to verify again and it should solve the problem.

Thank you both for your fast response with information.

ill try what EzBusinessNeeds has advised me and

    BILZ, google says
"Copy the meta tag listed below and paste it in your site's home page in the first <head> section of the page, before the first <body> section."

I copy the meta tag and past it just below <head> tag and when i press save it disappears from there and is saved below <body> and hence its not verified by google i think.

I believe I am clear this time.

The meta is easy, just put it with the other meta tags on your site (albeit last)
