Each directory has a unique schedule for reviewing and approving link submissions. Some directories will approve your link the same day, others within a few days, or a week. Others will take a month, or even several months.

    Here’s the reason:

Reputable web directories which offer free links are usually very popular, and it takes times for the editors to review each site. (Believe me, you don’t want to be linked from the type of web directory that approves all links without taking the time to review them – those are “link farms” and are of absolutely no value.)

For instance, I own a small specialized-topic directory (writing/art/music) and my experience is that it’s very time consuming to go through the many submissions. Generally I have a backlog of about 100 links waiting to be approved. (That’s not a lot – some directories have thousands!) Nearly all of them are free links and I just have to delete the obvious spam, then visit the rest of the websites (yes, I do visit every website before I approve it) and approve the worthy ones when I have time to do it. Paid links don't come nearly as often as the mountains of free ones that get submitted. Most directory owners are in the same situation. There is a lot of work to do and they are generally not getting paid much of anything to do it.

A few directories are especially fast but this is often because they have larger staffs, and so can review more links. Or, they are quite new and don't have a large volume of submissions coming in yet.

Keep in mind that you're asking for a free link; the directory owners are not getting paid for this so can’t keep large staffs to deal with the volume of submissions. Paid links get added much faster, because those are what pays for the directory. They are few and far between.

If getting links very quickly is of great importance, you can always pay for them. Most directories offer a paid optoin. That’ll move you to the head of the approval line; usually these are approved in just 1-3 days. Cost for each link varies from directory to directory, but many can be had for just $2 – $10 each.

As someone who runs a manual directory submission service, I try to submit to those directories which I've found have had good approval times in the past.

    Hope this helps!
    best,
    Denise

Average time - 3 months. Many approve within a week but some can take even a year before approving your listing.

For free dirs there's no average, you just can't tell. On many it will take forever(like dmoz :D).
Go for paid and you'll have 1-2 days.

In many directories you can look at the latest link page to see when they last approved links. Sometimes you have to click over to the Read More page to see the date. You can also compare the latest links page to the Google cache and that can be a good indicator.

The free ones tend to be instant (most not all) because they are entirely automated.

The ones that take a long time, or generally never are just not maintained at all.

For a respectable functioning and current directory, free, paid or otherwise, I think 24-48 hours seems to be the norm, unless they explicitly state otherwise.

    Why are you asking?

Directories are classified in to two

    1. Free
    2. Paid

When you submit a website to paid directories the listing will be fast ( one week) but if it is a free directory the lead time for approval would be a month.

I dont run free directory but for the one I do it takes me only up to 48 hours to review listing, sometimes I stay up late and see one come in check it out right there, and if approved it goes alive in under 1 hour.
It all depends.Keep in mind that for most of us this is not a full time job. Just a hobby ;)

It depends on directory owner, sometime some directory give approval within 3 days and sometime it will take 2-3 months also, we can not judge on this..

I did a quick check of the directories in my list and here's what directory owners say their approval time is.

1040 directories approve in 3 days or less
    157 4 to 7 days
    1715 8 to 15 days
    1324 16 days or more
