Noob questions about advertising...

I looked through the other sections and figured this was the most relevant to put this question in. I do not have any experience in owning a website but I do have a concept I believe would get great traffic and would be able to sell ad space on. I'm now doing the research to see if it is worth pursuing.
That being said I have a few questions and doubts that I hope you guys can help me with.

    1. What is the minimum traffic a website needs before it can sell ad space? I know this is very naive because there are many types of ads but I'm looking for the minimum figure before it is able to place ads other than PPC.
    2. What is the best structure to use, PPC, CPM, or a set cost per ad spot?
    3. How do I set the price of ad space? Is there any standardized rule that everyone follows for pricing?
    4. I've seen websites like plentyoffish, and some others that have a completely generic, and automatic advertising system where the advertiser does all the work to get the ad placed. Is that something that each site programs or creates on their own, or is there a program I could use that would work the same?

    Thanks!

in my opinion, i think all of your questions REALLY depend on what kind of business/site you're trying to focus on.  Large publishing sites usually have CPM, or a combination of CPM and fixed fee and performance.  It's really hard to answer your questions though because they seem extremely general, and much of it comes down to your own business

I am a firm believer that if you are going to have an ad supported site you should have ads running from day 1. You can start with some google ads and as you start building traffic add other types of ads to the site. Or you can signup to promote some related affiliate offers and place them in the ad spots.
