Noob Question - Computer Monitor Shakes Uncontrollably

Discussion in 'Hardware' started by northpointaiki, Oct 25, 2006.

Hi all - this is likely a noob question.

From time to time, my computer monitor will just go crazy - shaking up and down violently, making it impossible to work. Closing the browser doesn't help, and a hard reboot doesn't always help.

Looking at task manager, the active processes report itself shakes crazily.

Is this a virus? Or common problem otherwise? What is this about?

    Thanks.

It's either a virus, or your CRT is dying

it may be time to buy a new monitor

I would say that is most likely the CRT is on it's last legs.

we had one when you turned it on it would start to "pop" it was loud and scary and then one day yeah, it just didn't turn on and I think I saw smoke - certainly smelled it.

    -------------------

ok, here's a question - would the "degauss" button have anything to do with something like that??

I just hit the degauss button, and something bizarre happened - like it smacked the monitor upside the head before returning to normal. What is this all about?

OK, never mind - read up on it. Maybe this will help; time will tell.

Usually hitting that button will solve monitor display problems. If it happens again you may want to consider replacing the monitor.

depeding on the monitor it might need to be degauss once in a while.
if it keeps happening soon after you degauss,it may be going out the door.
have you checked that the refresh rate is right(not to high or low)?
