This seems suspicious. I offered to buy the domain but wanted some proof of ownership that the seller owns the domain / website.

He could not respond to feeback left on the domain website.

He then offered to send an email from the registered whois address, but all I got was a spoofed email via X-Mailer: Anonymail

When I replied to the whois email address, I didn't get a response back indicating no real access to the gmail account listed.

Nuff said, and buyer beware. I'm not touching this.

True. The correct owner of the domain did get back to me and confirmed this guy was a scammer.

But then later in the day I did buy a nice domain from a very good seller without any hassles. So there are plenty of good people here - it's just a couple of bad apples trying to spoil it for everyone.
