NoFollow Backlinks from PR9 Site - Any Value?

Discussion in 'Link Development' started by Ascendancy, Jan 12, 2010.

I have a few Twitter accounts, all having backlinks in the "web URL" section to my site. Twitter is very high up there on the list (Alexa top 100, PR9 etc...). However, their links are all NoFollow... so does this mean they have no value to my site at all?

Google does not give any link value or link juice to no follow links....you will not get any Page Rank value out of this activity....all major social sites have no follow links

Twitter posts do get shown on the front page of google ever since they turned the live search loose, this may be of benefit if you are tweeting your links.

Two comments on "link juice"/pagerank and the value of a link:

First, SEO is what it is. The value of a link is not calculated solely in pagerank or "link-juice". There is value in the fact that people could actually click on them, and visit your site. There is also value in that your profile could get indexed, providing another place where a real live user could find your link.

People are so caught up in the whole "backlink building for pagerank" it seems most have forgotten the basics. The current idea is:

link juice -> pagerank(or 'authority' on non-google SEs) -> SERP boost -> traffic

It's a good system, works long term. However when you can shorten the cycle to it's original form:

    link -> traffic

you're doing good, that's quicker value.

Second, as regards the pagerank specifically, you'll find a lot of opinions on how well homepage pagerank transfers to inner pages. In either case your twitter profile page probably has a specific pagerank of zero, and it's doubtful that google is going to give a profile page (these pages are easily recognizable as 90+ percent duplicate content in the code, if nothing else) a lot of authority, or weight.

As for the nofollow, NoFollow is, in my OPINION, a smoke screen. I personally believe that in the right context, a nofollow link can prove to be more valuable on a SERP than a "dofollow" link on the same page.

As to why I believe that, I'll keep it to myself :) and just say there is always value in doing things properly.

remember that nofollow tag only affects your ranking in google, Yahoo and other search engines still love nofollow links, no-follow backlinks from very popular websites DO have value.

    Yahoo uses "nofollow". Ask doesn't.

Thanks goliath for the great post! I have to say you cleared up a lot in the air, and I feel confident having all of these links on my profile pages because I know I'll be getting tons of clicks and traffic in the long run

At last some sense. Too many people get bogged down with this whole concept of links having to come from High PR Pages etc etc. The most common theme to have come out of anyone who has had any involvement with Google ikn the past 12 months is that you need to mix it up. Make your SERPS Landscape look organic, make it look natural as if it was made by humans and not programmed machines. Part of this whole organic approach is to have a wide variety of types of links, redirects, misspellings, typos, dofollow, nofollow and........as wide a spread of different class of IP the better.

Finally as to PR? Page Rank doesn't get you sales but good SERPS will. I have seen many a low PR site that was promoted and optimised well whip the butt off a medium to High PR site.

I agree. If you wanted to increase your google page rank, then you need to submit on do follow websites.

Google keeps surprising me. I have a new blog (November), and no traffic at all because it's more personal than commercial.
I put a few links, many no follow, in blog comments but I think not more than 20 links AT ALL (60% nofollow). Now, 2 weeks ago it's PR 1. How?? I don't know...maybe google does give importance to nofollow links. I really can't figure it out.
