I'm a bit confused between follow and nofollow. If my site is listed on another site which has nofollow in the .htacess, does this mean that my page rank won't increase because it won't be seen as a backlink??
The spiders usually do follow the links, but the search engines do not give any "juice" to the corresponding site. rel="nofollow" Action -------------------------------Google----------------- Yahoo! ----- MSN Search ------------ Ask.com Follows the link ------------------------------- Yes---------------------Yes --------not proven---------------- Yes Indexes the "linked to" page --------------------- No-------------- -------Yes--------- No-------------------------- Yes Shows the existence of the link---------Only for a previously indexed page --------Yes----------No-------------------------Yes In SERPs for anchor text ------------- Only for a previously indexed page --------Yes----------No-------------------------Yes
so its probably not a good idea for me to link to sites who have nofollow in their htacess cause it won't help my pagerank. thanks for clearing that up!
If all you're interested in is PR, then yes. But why would you only be interested in PR? I think it's been established that PR is a very overrated factor and often does not correspond to the traffic a site will get.
Its still good.. because you can still gather some traffic to that site especially if it is a well ranked and has a high traffic site..
If it's a related site and, especially, if it's popular then it shouldn't matter if the link is nofollow. Quality traffic is quality traffic. However, I'm sure, nofollow does matter for improving your SERPs. Who cares if your PR increases (unless you're selling links/blog posts)?! The related content page linking to your page will improve the SERP.
If your site was listed on other site that uses nofollow, it means will not pass a link juice to your site. But it's possible that you have backlinks in site because google still follow sites that uses nofollow they just don't pass PR juice.
It means the spider won't follow the link, therefore not counting it as a backlink. That is, as per my knowledge.
Thanks for this info. But I have one question: When you say "In SERPs for anchor text", do you mean that the backlink could improve your page's ranking for searches using that anchor text even if the backlink has a nofollow tag? Thank you
