no recip link needed: a myth

the last 2 posts i've noticed for 'no recip. link back needed' have both been by new directories that, once you find the correct cat and hit the add url, ask for reciprocal links with a caveat that, although not really really needed, your link has a snowball's chance in hell of getting done if you don't give a recip link.

    is this the new black?

Post the exact wording. Kwik Goblin asks for one but it in no way keeps you from being accepted.

Im curious what wording implies the snowballs chance in the directories you are thinking of.

    haha,

Thats the trick of directory owners actually. Like there are many stupid ebay scams which people falls in, there will be some url submitters giving a link back. Thus helping directory to get a good PR in next update. But then the submitter is actually getting benefit. Higher PR => you will get some part of it to your site in long run.

    Regards,

it'd be appreciated if they could keep their tricks out of the DP forum.

"Submit to this directory, link back is NOT compulsory" etc.

I have a couple, and if people link back to me they get promoted in the search results, and also might get links across many other sites. A funny thing is that I come across sites that are up to all sorts in my work as I compare sites to my clients. I have to put up with content theft, and all sorts. One thing that many people forget is that the professionals in web marketing are often the same people who are editors at some of the important directories. e.g. I had someone rip off my site and a client site, then submit to Skaffe. I am the UK editor for skaffe, and part of the checks I do on submitted sites is to check with copyscape for plagiarism. ;)

I am a firm believer in karma, and what you sow, you reap.

I have spent a fair amount of time weeding out the directories that do not require a backlink to be listed. Here are the best free directories to submit your site to.

The list at info.vilesilencer.com is good too. They weed out the directories that are slow to approve submissions or make other negative changes. I find that many directories which start out free change their policy down the road.

I don't mind if someone asks for recip link, but there are definitely some directories that promote themselves as 'free' but make it pretty obvious you won't see the light of day unless you provide a link back. It's annoying, yea, but whatever....it's a free world, I just move on to the next one. Although if I'm getting good placement (not buried on page ten four levels down) then I try to give them love by linking from other sites.

I also don't like it when a directory promotes itself as "free", you spend time finding the right category and entering the submission info and then find out at the end that they are more like a "recip" directory than a free directory.

For the ones on this board that say 'no recip' and then ask for one, I assume no recip is needed for DP members, everyone else needs one. So, I just put "DP forum referral" in the edit box. I don't think anyone has not listed me for that.

This is actually interesting, while you are about to submit then you notice these wordings "Though link back is not necassary, but would be highly appreciated". So, I just enter that particular directory in my "Free" alldotnet directory, provide a recip link and hit submit. Where its mentioned Recip link will give you premium listing I opt for it and again provide a link from my directory.

My point is people seeking optional recip are running their directory, as per their business model, so its their approach and They have this style of operation and they have opted for it and I honor that. :D
