I personally wouldn't recommend using go daddy just starting out since it can be very expensive. Hosting is hosting, it's like your garage at your house, it's just a place to store your stuff (i.e. your web page files) some hosting comes with extras such as a built-in site builder or all sorts of settings you can change that will take you months to figure out. I use Powweb just because it's fairly cheap and easy to use and it had a built-in drag and drop site builder when I started. I have heard hostgator is good as well?? If you want free hosting just to play with try something like 000webhosting or weebly.

Think of a domain name like a phone number and the landing page is you... If you are in sales someone calls your phone number(domain address) wanting a product and then you try to sell them yourself(your landing page).

Ideally you would want your phone number(domain address) something like 1800fatty or 1800loseweight, because people would remember that, but that number is probably taken so you will have to do some research to find one that works as close to the product as you are trying to sell

Your landing page is you. If you were trying to sell me a product how would you do it, You might start out by tell me what is does? How it does it? Benefits? Why is it better then the rest of the products out there? Then tell me how great it is! And it’s the best deal ever!

Getting traffic is the toughest part… The first step after you have your website name and your website built is to tell the search engines you are out there, basically you are adding your name to the phone book. You do that by searching for yahoo webmaster tools, google webmaster tools, msn webmaster tool… basically all the search engines you can find and they will all have a form that you fill your information into.

Getting traffic part 2… Ok, so you have told the search engines you exist, Well they have 8 million other web pages out there about your same product and you are on the bottom.

So how are you going to make that web page move from the bottom of the pile to the top? That is the toughest toughest part, You need the search engines to like you, Once search engines like you they will then start displaying your web page at the top of the pile or ideally on the first 3 pages of any search for your type of product. Everyone has an opinion on how to do this. Some of them include, Having great SEO(search online about SEO), Write articles, Blogs, Forums, Facebook, Myspace, Contact other webmaster to see if they can add a link to your website(back linking), Email lists, Could you afford maybe a TV commercial??(kidding)…

The key to internet marketing is to keep with it! And read read and more reading.

It is all a bit confusing in the beginning but if you just start with a free place like blogger.com or Squidoo ( I am a huge fan of Squidoo!) then as you learn and add stuff the cobwebs will start to clear - believe me, we all started somewhere!

I would not pay to do anything, if I were you, until you have a better grip on it all.

So here is what you can do: Let's just pretend we are building a site on Skinny Thighs

    1) Set up a blog at blogger - name it Skinny Thighs

    2) Write about your topic - add some pictures

    3) Add a few posts over the course of a few days

    4) Add links to your Clickbank product

Getting traffic to your site will take some learning - but as you go along you will learn all about keywords, seo and all that stuff that just wants to get tangled up in your brain right now..

    Good luck!

    Hey tomlive,

I actually suggest you spend a considerable amount of time just cruising around forums such as this one familiarizing yourself with the concepts behind affiliate marketing. From your questions, it's easy to see that you have a lot to learn before you can even start out. And please don't think I'm saying this in a mean way, but you do need to have at least a general concept in your mind before you invest any time or money into setting up websites and such, otherwise you'll just go through a lot of frustration without making any sales.

By the way, if you're going to do Clickbank, you might also want to read vendors' affiliate pages, they often give a lot of newbie information for promoting their specific product.

    Tomlive,

There is a lot of really good information in here and on other similar forums. I too was confused by all of this when I started out, you just need to do a lot of reading. Also you might want to check out the first site in my signature, you can get some useful info there.

    Good luck!

You will need a domain name and hosting to get your website up. After that you have to choose on how you want to drive traffic to the site. It's usually a good idea to start with article marketing since it's free. Just look for keywords with good traffic and low competition and write articles on them and send them to your site.

Read through these forums and you will learn a lot of good information.

I'm going to suggest a slightly different approach from the others. I think you should jump in head first and just do it. You can read and read and read and read about it, but until you try it it's hard to succeed.

From my experiences, setting up a web site (landing page) isn't that expensive, but there is a slight investment. Still, if you are serious about pursuing affiliate marketing, it's worth spending a little money. You can do it for well under a hundre bucks.

    I suggest:

    1. Downloading the free trial version of an easy-to-use web desgin software. I use Web Page maker ( http://www.webpage-maker.com ). Tinker with it. See if you can make up a simple site that can be used as a landing page. Cost: Free

    2. Go to GoDaddy and register a domain name. Start by just browsing to see what's available. weightlossproducts.com, iwanttoloseweight.com... I dunno... see what's there. Then, when one looks good, pay the 9 bucks and register it. Cost $9.

    3. There is cheaper hosting out there, but just splurge and pay for GoDaddy hosting. The economy plan is only $3.99 per month. The reason I suggest GoDaddy is because they have a 24/7 tech support via phone. They're very helpful and they can walk you through the process of setting up the site on your domain. It's complicated, but not when you have someone on the phone saying "Click this... now click this... now type this...". Cost: $48 for the year.

    4. Now make up your website. It'll be your landing page from which you promote clickbank products. Write some glowing reviews for weight loss products and toss in some clickbanks links. Cost: Free

    5. I suggest a big splurge here. Go to the contest forum on DigitalPoint and put up a $20 prize for a logo/header for your site. You'd be amazed at the enthusiasm and talent in that forum. And it's fun to run a contest. And you're site will be a lot more professional-looking with a custom header graphic. Cost: 20.

    6. Upload your website. If you need help getting it to upload correctly, give the support guys on GoDaddy a ring. They've helped me many times before.

    7. Write articles for ezinearticles.com and goarticles.com and (of course) add a link to your new site. Add a link to your site in popular forums. Become a "guest blogger" and write articles for blogs and (of course) include your link. Get traffic to your new site by adding links to your website all over the place.

    Total investment:

    $9 for a one-year domain name registration
$48 for a year of GoDaddy Hosting
$20 for a graphic in the DigitalPoint contest forum
    ------
    $77 = your total investment

That's not a bad investment for someone who is serious about making money on Clickbank. Now all you have to do is sell a couple of products and you'll have your money back.

I suggest going all out and jump in head first. The only way to learn how to set up a landing page (it's just a website with reviews and clickbank links on it) is to jump in and try it.

Blogging via Wordpress - probably not as profitable, but it is cheaper. And without your own domain name, you'll lack the professional feel... and you won't seem as credible in the eyes of visitors.

The key is to take your time and think everything though as you do it. Design your website with care. Be sure the reviews are thoughtful and convincing. Be sure the graphics are spiffy. Be sure the Affiliate links include graphics and little pictures of products. Make your website as attractive and professional as you possibly can.

It takes time... it takes work... but that's how you succeed.

I wish you luck and success!

P.S. Here's a secret tip. Once you have your website set up, email some clickbank publishers. Give them your website address so they can see the page. Then tell them you want to review their product. Many of the better publishers will give you a free copy of their product to review. If you want the free stuff, though- you need to have the site up and running so they know you're serious about promoting it. Not every publisher will do this, but many do.

It is good to jump in quickly and not get caught up with info overload, but I also think it's a good idea to at least have a plan of action and not just haphazardly throw a site and articles together and hope for the best.

If he's writing a lot of articles that never rank well the chances of making a sale will not be as high. That's why getting a good idea of keyword research and how to properly market with articles will serve him better in my opinion. Just don't get caught up reading TOO much to where you avoid taking action.

You make a good point, J. You do need to know about keyword research and SEO and getting articles to rank high.

I am just thinking about how I started out in this business. I think I learn best by doing... making mistakes... and doing it again... I don't think I had much of a plan, really.

It was more like, "A website... I can make one of those. "

Then it was, "Now let's figure out how to get some traffic..."

Then, "Oh... I need to make it a GOOD website. I can do that."

Then, "Dang, I still need to work on traffic. Let's figure out what everyone's talking about with this keyword research stuff."

Then, "I have some traffic, but why aren't people clicking on these links and buying stuff? Oh, my site needs to look more professional. Let's get some graphics."

Then, once I started selling stuff, it was "This is fun. Let's try it again with a new niche."

So I kind of figured it out as I went along. Maybe I'm just a tinkerer... a tryer... learn-by-doing person.

A more analytical person might want to read, come up with a business plan, then do it. But that seems more like work to me. :)

this seems to be a newbie question that everybody has explained very well.

a domain is different from a landing page. read a networking book to find out what a domain is (google is there to guide you as well) and an internet marketing book will definitely spell out the mysteries with the landing page.

a landing page is part of a website or it maybe the whole website as well.

GoDaddy is just one of those paid hosting websites, there are many others you may want to look up. PM me for more details.

and yes, buying a domain that has keywords on it is a great help on gaining traffic.

If you want a targetted traffic in your site then post on forums that talks about your niche, create a blog as well and link it to your site, you can also publish press releases or submit your articles to article directories.

I see where you're comin from too.

Everyone has their own way of doing something but what it really comes down to is just making sure you take some sort of action.

I actually got started in PPC and I didn't really look into it too much and somehow my first campaign worked out for me. The next 4 or so didn't turn out too well though so that's why I started to look into free ways of marketing and for that I read into it a lot to develop a plan. Seems to be working out so far.
