No of links in 6 months?

    For a newly hosted website, what should be the maximum no of links one should be looking to build during the initial 4-6 months, so as one should not fall a victim to excessive link building.

    I believe in consistency not numbers myself. I've seen no proof of a magic number.

    I mean to say upto how much u can get away with possible google spamming policy. As if i create 5000 links in n3 months for a newly hosted site i will definately get banned.
