majesticseo.com works pretty well to get a good idea. Also if you add your site to google webmaster tools they give you some data.

Most of the backlink tools are not correct, the best way is to combine them. The most important thing of backlink building is perseverence. Find good forums and keep doing it.

    Now I'm using ahrefs tool
    https://ahrefs.com
It's the best tool in market. Backlinkwatch is crap to my eye, not updated.
But ahrefs tool updates every hour.
2nd tool after ahrefs is Open Site Explorer. But it's not updated too. So better to use ahrefs tool.
You can compare other tools to see result.

I'd recommend you not to use many ranking checkers... but a simple site that just verifies your backlinks shouldn't be a major issue...

You know: Google is warning us not to use ranking checker tools... of course, they're most probably referring to rather complex tools that abuse/use up Google's bandwidth with tons of queries...

Where I used to work we always used OSE, it was a great tool with option to export to spreadsheet which made client work a whole lot easier, problem is their monthly subscription is a bit too pricey for individual use. ahrefs looks good too but again pricey subscription. Backlinkwatch is not that great in my opinion, I guess you don't get what you don't pay for!

I haven't used SEO Spyglass to have an opinion but at least the price is more palatable. Is anyone able to give a review of Spyglass vs OSE and ahrefs in terms of accuracy?

    Best tool is opensiteexplorer.org

    Some other tools i use:

    linkdiagnosis :
fast and gives lots of info , you just need to install their addon.

    backlinkwatch:
Simple and effective tool to quickly analyze backlinks, it also gets updated quickly.

    linkdetective
List down different types of backlinks like: directories, blog comments, articles etc.
