Oh but you're wrong. I do charge a one time fee, and I do pay editors, and like I said elsewhere I could pay ten editors and still be well into the green. My editors are very under-worked. So much so that 99% of their time is spent, not reviewing listings, but adding sites (organically added sites). I don't know where you folks get your numbers, but if a directory is run correctly there is a couple hundred thousand left over after operating costs. If you cannot edit a web directory with that kind of money, you shouldn't be in the directory business.
Well John. Did u do the P & L of your directory? I mean ok, so u can afford to pay a bunch of editors, but are u talking about 'the income from the directory' can afford to pay a bunch of editors. Ok, so you've got a big directory like botw, with a couple hundred thousand listings. Thousands of visitors a day and a clustered server environment. It's different from the vps or single dedicated business. Ever try to get Rackspace to do some admin work? I mean I don't care, and am just debating on how the 1 time fee business model just doesn't work. It might work temporarily but in the long run it collapses. Take a look at this directory manufacturers.com.tw, they recently submitted to linkspub. They are getting over 150,000 visitors p/month, have over 20,000 companies listed and I think has an annual charge. I mean I'm basically making the GoingBusiness . com network and not just an seo directory. You know what I'm saying. There is a difference in business models here. take care
Not at all. The v7n site - the whole site, not just the directory, gets around 40,000 uniques per day, and we do just fine with a dedicated server. I've run directories much, much bigger, and most directories in themselves do not require a dedicated server. In fact, I have a full copy of DMOZ on one of my servers, and it does fine on a shared server. I've also hosted GoGuides on my servers, and it wasn't resource intensive either. Seriously, folks, where is all the money going? I pay my editors $12 an hour, and that's not even $2,000 a month per editor.
adnan - I hear what your saying but I believe most big directories (notice I said most) HAVE to charge annually as they have monthly payments to make for their PR. If they stopped paying their monthly dues their PR would drop and their business would die. If a company took care of their $ properly if they get to the point they need that many servers etc... Cost shouldn't be an issue at all. The money goes into their pockets and towards paying for their PR. I'd rather spend my $ on a big dir that got there organically; I don't mind paying for a listing, however I refuse to lease.
Well according to the data I have you get 27,000 uniques a month from the United States. Which creates a difference of 1.1 million uniques p/month. So the actual visitors, (non unique) should be around 4.5 - 6 mil and pageviews should be around 40 - 60 mil since u got a forum and people view alot of pages in a forum. I'm just doing the math according to the numbers you gave me. What kind of server you running I could be wrong cause its your site, u should know your stats the best.
LOL. You need a new psychic. DP probably four times more traffic, maybe more, than v7n. Shawn made his stats public before - why not search for them? No, I'm sure your psychic knows my stats better than I do.
http://snapshot.compete.com/v7n.com There not really very accurate but quite accurate. compete says less then my reports. 24k p/month you say 40k p/day ----> 1.2 mill uniques p/month I'm not trying to be smart or anything, but you would need a very fast server to handle that much processing. Multiple smaller machines would outperform that single server anyday.
http://snapshot.compete.com/gii.in?metric=uv and my Cpanel & stats software shows me different stats, BTW how can external counters know a websites traffic? until & unless they have inserted some hidden code in my ftp. People dont reply on Alexa too but since there was no other measure to count the traffic, some people use it but heard about this snapshot thingy for the first time.
I have many very fast servers. I've hosted a lot of websites that get more traffic than that, on lessor servers, and those servers were quite adequate.
I don't really care if you get a billion uniques a day. Being a computer science guy, I'm just having a hard time trying to understand how a single dedicated handle that load. 40k uniques ---> 200k non uniques 200k non uniques ----> 200k x 5 pageviews = 1 mil pageviews p/DAY 1 mil x 30 = 30 mill pageviews p/month A single dedicated server would be very overloaded 30 million pageviews per month.
Amit. In the united states, isp's and companies like ntt.net have a collaboration and share data with each other. Like I said, its not accurate to the dot but will give you a ballpark figure.
Are u sure. What's your bandwidth usage like, cause to process 75 million pages you would need appr 4000 Gigs or 4 Terrabytes of bandwidth. Do you know what kind of switch your server uses? I'm not even doing the math for that but I guess u would need something like 100 Mbit p/sec. Whatever, nice debate. I'm still sticking on my yearly fee plan. take care
Just checking a few sites and it really is way off. http://snapshot.compete.com/internet-marketing-blog.com?metric=uv Reporting 326 uv a month. Gets more than twice that in a day, not a month.
Here is a big joke - http://snapshot.compete.com/compete.com+v7n.com+digitalpoint.com?metric=uv Alexa of Each shows - Compete - 2530 V7n - 1200 Digitalpoint - 129 Still confused how compete shows similar traffic to dp when alexa is much lower Very accurate
Maybe you should call compete up and tell them bout this. or Maybe more people should visit v7N with the alexa toolbar installed.
