NO Follow Tags - Is the Link Still Valuable

Perhaps someone with expertise can explain to me no follow tags and the limitations of links with no follow tags
I believe that I understand the basic concepts of the no follow tag and why the practice was initiated and developed ( for good reason)
I do not fully understand the logistics , limitations of no follow tags and the limits , limitations of these links and if there are any benefits of incoming links that are graded are tagged as no follow
On link evaluation reports I often see no follow links identified as incoming
If the link was not to be followed by source how is it that the link is caught as an incoming link to a site
If it was not supposed to followed how is it that a tool picks them up as incoming to the site being evaluated ?
Perhaps someone could explain this to me

    thank you

I feel no follow does not carry link authority, but if it in relevant site you would get some targeted traffic.

    Its quite a controversial subject.
Basically the nofollow tag is there to stop sites spamming and to stop the manipulation of Pagerank BUT....

There is some people(me included) who believe Google do look at some nofollow links and include them in thier ranking metrics.

For example if you have a resource on wikipedia and your link has been on there for a few years it tells google that your link must be good and valuable.
Similar to Twitter, if a tweet is retweeted a lot then that tells Google that its a popular and possibly important link.

I agree 100% there must be a way that Google and co. still take into account some nofollowed links. The bulk of nofollowed's however are completely negated, which in alot of situations is the way that it should be (blog comments, myspace, facebook.....)

    your 100% right
Google is still working out which ones to use in their ranking metrics but ive seen a few examples of where a clients site picked up a few wikipedia links and after a few months saw some really good results

No follow links can help with rankings but millions of such links will not boost the PR of the sites they are pointing at.

Agree with you that wikipedia is counted
Google breaks it own rules or create some hidden rules

But its not a piece of cake to get your link on wikipedia, I am wondering how you managed it :) until and unless it not perfectly matched or relevant or analysed you will not get your link on wikipedia , I would like to see some of the links if you dont mind , Thanks in advance

I think Google must take no follow links into account purely for natural linking purposes. If it crawls a site and finds 1000 backlinks that are all do follow what do you think it's going to think? Link building please :O. Remember with PR and link building Google considers the links to a site as a vote, it needs to look natural enough :).

At the end of the day it's the traffic that matters of course. Getting relevant people visiting your site is the goal of SEO :).

In the end No Follow link is still a link that points back to you. It most likely will not raise your page rank but like edrectory said at the end of the day it's about traffic. If you're linking from relevant sites you should be getting targeted traffic which is most important!
