Google measures webs popularity depending on the number of inbound links. This is quite understandable for everyone. The more links you have the more interesting you content will and the more willing will be the other web sites to drive visitors towards your site.

However there is an intrinsic contradiction when we talk about no follow links.

Other sites may consider you site interesting and they will will want to redirect visitors to your site. However, they can use no follow links and avoid getting penalized by google, while you don't get any profit according to google´s requirements.

The bottom line is, you may be very popular, but with only no-follow links, in google´s eyes your popularity will be rock-botton.

How can you get around the no follow links issue?

Hi, in the first place, Google does not only measure web popularity depending on the number of backlinks but the quality of the links. Nowadays, the number of backlinks is getting lesser emphasis than the quality.

No follow will not pass your page that related webpage's PR but it is still good for inorganic traffic from the webpage which points to you. Guess you just have to live with the "no follow" rule since I do not think there is a way around it.

Well I don´t quite agree with your comment that google will ignore no-follow links.

If I am not wrong, on google webmasters tool, on the links section, google usually includes some no follow links.

Back Link with No follow tag means no Link Juice passed to your website. Every search engine has their own algorithm and here to be specific Google's crawler won't follow the no follow links.

You can still get your site listed in any such directory or website where they put no follow tag to your website. Only if they are having good number of visitors which may be diverted towards your website. Make it a point to remain topical while building links for your website.

It makes me think that PR is not that important anymore due to the fact that links that passes PR is bad for Google, as I have read the recent articles.
