I am thinking of creating a social voting website similar to Digg. Do you guys think it's more beneficial SEO wise to setup a script to use the nofollow attribute for all the URLs containing links to the stories? If I don't use nofollow, will Google see my website as a link farm? Thanks in advance, -DigiP
I would keep it as follow - Digg does this, and it works just fine for them. I think if users find out that it is nofollow they will be less likely to use it. And because of the nature of such a site, I don't think Google will consider it a linking farm - link farms have hundreds of links with no other text. Social bookmarking sites have a couple dozen links per page at most, with descriptive text and whatnot around each link.
Digg has the team to combat spam, you won't. Your better off using nofollow, this will remove easily 30% of the spam you'll recieve from people trying to increase Pagerank & SERPs.
Yes, just do as ssandecki said you can't control who are going to spam your SB site so you should put nofollow for safety... And Digg has members that moderates their site and banned those who tried to spam their site.
I think it will help if you don't use the nofollow but you should be strict to all the post into your bookmarking site. just like digg as your example, as we know that they're very strict on the type of posting that we've been share to their members. They've wanted a well relevant and informative to any of their category.
