Jim never fails to give good advice!

I just reached PR 4 on 12-31-08, and will be happy just to maintain that level for the next 4 years.

The amount of links that I need to get to the next level (15,000 PR-1's) would require forming my own cult of followers.

To take it to the "next level" --- I need to start a Cheesy Music Blog (or something of that nature), as a blog script on my domain (dj-mc.com).

The blog, if its got interesting content, will attract readers who will give you natural links.

that's my plan -- down the road.

For today, I'm just wanting to maintain my position in SERP.

I have a PR5 site that has nowhere near 15,000 links. What it does have is very good content and links from several reputable sites in its industry.

My recommendation to anyone that wants to get to PR5 is to make it the best site on the topic. There are really no shortcuts, or at least no shortcuts that will have any lasting impact.

Yes, it is hard. My current PR4 homepage had a PR5 for a while. I lost a couple of high-PR links, and that's all it took to drop to PR4.

This chart will tell you how many links you need from different PR levels to get a certain PR when Google updates again. Only backlinks from pages with PR will increase your PR... Hope this helps!

Based on my own experience I have to say I disagree with that chart and the whole idea that you need a certain amount of links to you from PR sites to gain PR. The reason so many people are losing PR lately is that Google is well aware that many people are buying PR links and they have started to devalue them. While quality IS still important over quantity (as it always has been), the keyword these days is RELEVANCE.

There are several threads on DP right now from people with high PR sites selling FFA links where they accept anything, and those sites are the ones that will get hit hard in the next update. I know because it happened to me too. On the other hand, if you collect RELEVANT links, irregardless of PR, then it's more in line with what Google wants. I've built many PR sites just through links from similar sites with no PR at all and it works great.
