No back links and first page in Google

I have a VERY minor site which I do NO seo work on with a PR of 1, it is ranking on page 1 for what can only be said as a very popular keyword for the market area of this website.

For quite a while it's been on page 2 and now has moved to page 1.

How can this be when I do nothing with it and for other sites that I do lots of linking etc it's not moving on up the pages.

    Thanks for any info.

hehe, this is not the issue. see as u got the ranking with just a onsite optimization it is good but if u dont have much back links than your ranking will lost within short time.
and don't worry abt your site no one will copy your ideas, there are genius members in this forums and giving url's for review.
ok no probs, al the best for ranking.

Maybe you use keywords that are not competitive keywords and you use appropriate keywords for your site..... :)

I would use the keyword suggestion tool and see if your term has over 50k searches per month. that is how I gauge a "popular term"

1st you need at least 1 BL to get indexed..so saying no BL is not quite the case here.
2nd probably you rank high for the keyword=name of your wewbsite or it is a FSB
and yes it hapened to me before
    www(dot)graniteinstallation(dot)com
had 1 link to it ( obviously it wouldnt get indexed otherwise)
and with just sign " website for sale" was #1 in google for granite installation for about 1 year without any more BL.
There is no secret to it and so is with your site most likely
    cheers

When I check G for back links none show at all, the domain name has NOTHING what so ever to do with the content of the website.

I very much doubt low competition for what the website is advertising. The site has been up and running for several years and been on page two for a year now and just moved to page 1.

Anyhow thanks for all your feedback.

My main reason for asking is I'm worried that if I do any SEO link building G knock the site from page 1.

Google only shows a fraction of backlinks, but knows about all of them. Google uses backlinks they don't show, they just don't want every webmaster copying the backlinks of a top ranking site. Use yahoo to check your backlinks.

Use the DP keyword suggestion tool to see how many searches are done a month (don't use quotes). Many people "think" they are ranking for a competitive term when it doesn't get many searches.

This can be the answer. Also, are you constantly adding content you your website lately? Google loves that. :D I'm also guessing that over time, other older sites decided to give a one way link to that site.

A friend of mine had his page on the first page of Google after it was indexed. It all depends on the competiveness of the keywords I'm thinking.

it will be almost impossible to rank on page 1 with 0 backlinks in a very compeitive market. If you can rank on page 1 for internet marketing without any backlinks, I say your a master!

sites with no backlinks usually(almost always) dont rank well, one of my sites ranks well for a competitive word and it has barely any backlinks, that i've determined is because of the keywords being in the domain name.

Congrads and work on staying there if its competitive! lol check if you forgot to put www. infront of it, and check the google webmasters links spot.(you probably already did both but im saying em just to say em)
