no 404 errors after using mod rewrite

    I am using a prettyurl mod rewrite for my smf forums

    i noticed i did not receive any 404 errors

    upon contacting my hosting support they indicated this line was the culprit

    RewriteRule ^([-_!~*'()$a-zA-Z0-9]+)/?$ ./index.php?pretty;board=$1.0 [L,QSA]

    what about this link prevents 404 errors?
