Well, the little SEO challenge put on by Search Guild and Dark Blue has started. Anyone ranking #1 for Nigritude Ultramarine after a month wins an iPod.

This is correct. I have attempted to start something up as a test to see how well I can stack up against the black hat SEOs out there.

Obviously the site I created is a bit spammy. Nobody would create something like that in real life as there would be more content and other links, etc. But I think Google will like it at least and that's what's important ;)

PS - Too bad it doesn't fit in my SIG. With all the HTML codes, the sig ran out of room :(

The not so funny thing is though, they said that the search phrase was not corporate and would not effect any companies.

    I disagree.

Did anyone stop to think about the word "ultramarine"? Do a search. Looks like lots of corporate sites to me.

And Time2Dine is in on the act too. Digitalpoint is a fab authority page to have a link to Nigritude Ultramarine from. Just how much power does one have to put into the page to be ranked 1st? What PR will one have to have? What PR are people prepared to, or have available to throw at it? Will it take 1000 links into it or 100,000, or 500,000. Will it be a new domain, or an existing domain that is already well thought of by Google. All these questions and more will be answered soon.

Nigritude Ultramarine will be a great selling point for seo services, more than the prize, a fun way of saying that against the whole world, you were the top, ranked xth.

Really it is not a measure of how good you are, but a measure of how much time you are willing to spend promoting it and how good your contacts are. Oh well, worth a shot anyway.

McDar and I had a look at it several days ago and decide to pass. It seemed obvious to us the the Guy/Gal with most links to throw at it will win. And we concluded there must be people out there who have ready access to 1000s and 1000s of link, so we didn't see how we could compete.

The interesting thing is that with a term that unusual you could get in first place on content alone. It will be interesting to see if links still rule with a search term this unique. Maybe it is a setup by the "content is king" school of thought to prove that you don't need links.

I'm not sure what it will really teach or prove given that the term is so unique. The real test of SEO would have been for some keyword phrase that gets searched on 3,000 or 4,000 time per day. That is where a real SEO expert would prove his/her metal.

I see the porn sites have been blown away as Google gets crawling. But what's with these guys using adwords to pay for ads near the top!

    http://www.aderit.com/?nigritude

I could understand using adsense to lure the bots in but my click just cost them!

I didn't think it possible. But look and see. The page is getting around 3 hits a minute at the moment.

There is certainly such a thing as Search Engine Optimisation!!!
