Hey everyone, we all know that the domain plays a big role in search engine rankings, at least for low competition keywords. This is my question: Does a .ca domain cause any problem regarding SEO? I mean, .com & .org are my favorites, but if they're not available, I'm wondering i should work around my keyword with the .com/.org, or get it from .ca Example, if my niche is toilet paper, and toiletpaper.com is taken, what would be the best choice from an SEO point of view: mytoiletpaper.com toiletpaper.ca Thanks for your help! Frank
Hey Frank, I can def answer your question - here's are my thoughts (I am an internet marketing specialist based in Canada): .ca vs .com - the question lies more with what audience you're targeting - global vs. canadian In general, no problem regarding SEO for .ca (even though it isn't a top level domain like a .com) The only thing is, if you are looking to attract a more global audience it is easier to target with a .com than with a .ca If you are, in fact, trying to garner traffic from Canada I would recommend the .ca with a server and IP address based in Canada. I would also include a local business listing with a Canadian address, and feature that address on your contact page as well. mytoiletpaper.com vs toiletpaper.ca - I would take the latter for a canadian audience. (KW in the url is a great start) Hope that helps, feel free to expand any questions you have in a PM
Frank, Google's computers were programmed for keywords and backlinks only. An extension of a website has nothing to do with it. You can also try the FM extension. I have one. It's different, it makes the domain stand out better when advertising and on biz cards, which, in turn, increases attention.
i agree, it's the keyword left of the dot that matterns the most, toiletpaper.ca is 100x better then mytoiletpaper.com, in terms of SEO, branding, & networking the only downside is that you might have a tougher time selling it if it's a startup site, as your target audience is smaller & poorer
