Well you probably picked the most popular, hardest ones to get good serps in, with a HUGE amount of competition for keywords.

    Good luck ;)

    Loads exisit, find a sub-niche
Travel portals/travel business directories and search engines exist and its competitive.
Very saturated, unless you do a regional one.

Most general directories are full of webmaster ans SEO sites, people researching seo are more lilely to go to somewhere like seomoz.org than a directory unfortunately.

I'd get researching a smaller and tighter niche where few operate if I were you ;)

We have been active in the travel sector continuously since 2000 it's tough and arguably one of the most competitive verticals on the web

Not recommended unless you have deep, deep pockets to promote

As your a virgin seo (so says your user name) maybe you should start even smaller! I wouldn't be surpised if some day soon micro-niche directories start springing up!

I'd go for a smaller niche such as a regional business directory which allows submissions from small local companies who might only have an email address or even physical address. Or a regional travel niche for a specific city or accommodation type. You'd need to advertise off the web but there's still lots of small businesses realising they need a web presence.

start a small business directory (yellow pages) for your town or neighborhood. it's easier to get to know the owners, offer them services, work with them etc.

not only can you make money trough adsense etc. but trough business listings, ads, banners etc.

i'm building one right now and kidna learning it through doing it.

    good luck!

I have a very niche/regional directory idea. I get a goodly number if Ireland (.ie) submissions. With Google listing in excess of 200,000 .ie sites plus other extension use that should be enough to build a nice niche regional directory. I don't know the area and to many projects going to try it so...

Very good idea but Yellow Pages scripts are expensive and I have had no luck (I wouldn't touch LD if they paid me) finding a good script to implement one.

I would really, really advice you to start with a really basic script. I have a guy working on my script right now. It is not expensive at all but it's basic as I said.

I also had few links for very inexpensive scripts saved somewhere. Let me take a look and I'll send you a pm.

If you check the left hand side of web-directories.ws there is a list of the most accessed categories. The most accessed niches are:
    1. Travel
    2. Webmaster
    3. Business
    4. Shopping
    5. Real Estate
    6. SEO

Would definitely recommend a local business directory. Promote it old school style with business cards around the neighborhood. That's the best 'SEO'!
