Nice traffic source

A few days ago I noticed a new referer:
    http://bitacle.org/
I didn't pay much attention to them, since I haven't heard about them (Its a blog search engine).
Today I was checking my stats and they already made it to number one under the links from other pages.
I do get most of the traffic from Search and Bookmarks and I guess Bitacle should really be under search but I do appreciate the added traffic.

You might want to check it out and submit your site there (don't as me, I didn't submit it myself).

I haven't quite figured out what they are. Maybe some members have added my rss feed to their homepages, who knows.

Yeah, you are right. So what is it then? I have no clue, only that it started to send me a bunch of traffic.

Yes, we figured that out already, but what is it?
Is it some sort of customizable homepage, a search engine or what?

It's a customizable homepage for people. You can add your own rss feeds, drag and drop the panels to where you want them to be and stuff.

I've never had much use for these types of sites but a lot of people seem to like them.

Thanks. I don't use them either, but they seem to bring some traffic so I won't complain :)

I hate to burst your bubble guys, but I'll bet the traffic you are seeing from bitacle is their overzealous crawler Bitacle bot/1.1. It's a pretty dumb bot and overspiders like crazy especially if you have an rss feed. Most stats packages don't recognize it as a bot. So I seriously doubt you are seeing real human traffic from Bitacle.

    Ouch. Thanks for the post.
For all those who don't read german:
Both articles are basically saying that bitacle is some sort of scraper that displays ones article in full (no abstract), with lots of advertisement around them.
I need to go through my logfiles in more detail to see if thats true. AWSTats doesn't show the full link information.

    Another Article Defeat Sploggers

    and at technorati: Bitacle

Its nice to have some traffic, but they scrape everything.. Not only the first words, but complete sites including your best pictures. You could try to block them with htaccess or anti-leech.

Hm. My RSS file only includes the teaser with a link to the actual article. From what I read, they publish the RSS feeds. If thats true, I couldn't care less. I have to see if they actually download more than just RSS.
If not, thats fine. I consider this to be the purpose of my RSS feed and if it really gets me backlinks all the better.
As I said, I need to analyze my logfiles and find my articles on their slow servers first to make a judgement.
I could provide them with a separate feed with a whole bunch of affilate links included in the teaser, just for their pleasure.
I have basically set up my RSS feed knowing that it will be used for such things. Is there any better way to get backlinks?
