Niantic is a google offshoot that started with an augmented reality game called Ingress which was followed up by Pokemon Go. Fast forward to March 2019 and they launched the much anticipated Harry Potter game (HPWU) followed up a year later by Catan and this year with Transformers. Somewhere in there they also launched Pikmin (sp?) which is an experience, not a game??? Catan was stuck in Beta with limited release. Personally I didn't find it compelling but there is a strong and loyal userbase - but not enough and it was recently announced that it would end. HPWU has a strong international following with dedicated users in the US who appeared to be spending lots. Not enough it seems. Embarrassingly simple bugs haven't been fixed and so today they've announced that HPWU will be turned off next year. Players of Ingress, PGo, and Transformers will be anxiously waiting for assurances that their games will continue.
I suspect Ingress will be around for awhile simply because it's the primary way locations get added to Pokemon Go. Shut down Ingress and you are hurting your money maker.
