There are many sites that will handle all of this for you so you only need to worry about your newsletter.

    One of the most popular is aweber, but there are plenty of alternatives;

There are a lot of choices, both free and paid services.

    Online Paid Services
    1. Aweber
    2. iContact
    3. ConstantContact

    Self-Hosted Software
    1. SendBlaster (Free)
    2. Newsletter Pro (Paid)
    3. Newsletter Ease (Paid)

If I were you, I would go for online solution instead of self-hosted. The ones I mentioned are reputable and legit, so your newsletter have a high chance to be delivered to recipients without being filtered to spam folder. That is a main big problem for any self-hosted software and hard to get it solved.

We use MailChimp (www.mailchimp.com) to send out our newsletters -- often to thousands of people at a time. It's not expensive. ($30-50/month, or you can purchase 'credits' which function as stamps for something like 3-cents each.) It's also much more intuitive and user-friendly than ConstantContact, which was a real hassle to use.

MailChimp is best-in-class for mass mailings...

I would go with PHPlist. I haven't used it much, but it looks good, and it's also an easy install.

Lot's of people already listed some good software. I would also encourage you to check out www.copyblogger.com -- some great newsletter tips on there. I read it all the time for ideas.

I have been using AWeber for many years, and I'm really satisfied. I'm know that some of the most well-known people in Internet marketing are now also using MailChimp, so you could consider this as well.

Yes, Mailchimp is a great alternative. I have experienced a very high delivery rate and is very user friendly. You can start with a free account store up to 500 subscribers and send 3,000 emails a month.

As far as quality and price goes. I would suggest Aweber.com
They also have great customer service as well.

I've recently received recommendations for email services from many different sources, and an incredibly high percentage of them listed Aweber first and foremost. They default to double opt-in (though you can disable it if you really want to), which gets their servers on many white lists, which keeps your messages out of the spam filters.
