News based sites

How are news based sites setup? Sites which do not produce their own news reports but simply list articles from cnn, fox, etc... What are the copyright rules you have to be careful of.

Are articles added manually, automatically scaped, RSS feeds, etc...

RSS usually. I wouldn't go scraping from any sites let alone CNN and all the big sites.. they will come down on you in a second ;)

Check out topix.net - an example of a (very successful) site that aggregrates news content.

    Costly?
I don't see the cost involved.

You set it up, set up RSS feeds and let it update itself.
If anything, it's the cheapest site you can run.

News sites can be very costly due to advertising costs. There are so many news websites out there right now that are run off of feeds that it is hard to become a major player. The easiest way to get your name out there would be by advertising, which can get very expensive.

If you want to set up a simple news site run of a couple of feeds, I would suggest WordPress. (wordpress.org) There are a couple of plugins out there that would allow you easily set this up with WordPress.

    What about something more complicated?

    A fully featured news site.

Then you would be best off having a custom site developed, so you can have it do exactly what you want.

It's not really something you can make with an out-of-the-box CMS.

It is better to focus on alternative news sites instead of the mainstream junk like cnn. The alternative news sites online are killing cnn and the new york times because they "try to tell the truth."

I never get my news from cnn or any of that mainstream, whitewashed, corporate crap.

I recently launched a news website. I can give you three tips:

    1. Have original content of sorts, somewhat akin to editorials. You won't cut it if you just regurgitate CNN et al. I'm about to do that on my site (this week hopefully!)

    2. Be funny/controversial/offbeat. Why would I want to read your website, which is just other websites' news, if it is boring?

    3. Find a niche. If you want to be the next CNN, good luck! But you can (more easily) become the biggest source of news for blue flip-flops. I chose my niche based on what I know best.

    Good luck :)

Having access to the news sources is a good move. There are thousands of papers all over the world. Many report their news based off of reports from sources such as the AP, which is the largest in the world.

As for "alternative" news sources killing CNN, what's that based on? Certainly not revenue or viewership.
