Diets with High Fructose Content Linked to High Blood Pressure among Men

    Source: http://www.healthnews.com/family-he...tose-are-raising-blood-pressure-men-3720.html

A recent study, carried out at the University of Colorado, in Denver, has confirmed that even natural sugars like fructose can substantially contribute to high blood pressure among men. This study was supported by the National Institutes of Health. It was already known that high-sugar foods, i.e. containing synthetic sugars, are a cause for raising blood-pressure. However, this study opines that men consuming natural sugars like fructose too are equally prone to developing elevated blood pressure. These findings are bound to create a stir since heart diseases and diabetes are some of the common lifestyle diseases linked to elevated blood pressure levels. Another surprising observation surfaced during this study when some over-the-counter medications used for treating gout were found useful for preventing the fructose-induced rise in blood pressure. Allopurinol, a popular drug used for lowering uric acid levels in patients suffering from gout has been confirmed to be particularly useful in this context. These findings are also important from the perspective of making dietary choices. For instance, common foods such as corn syrups have a substantial amount of fructose. Further, this form of sugar is one of the most commonly-used sugars used among packaged foods. Similarly, sweetened beverages, including many branded drinks, contain a high proportion of fructose as a sweetener.

Senegal President Seeks to Restore Civilian Rule in Aftermath of Niger Coup
    http://www.orble.com/get-updated/ (my post)

President of Senegal, Mr. Abdoulaye Wade, seems intent on undertaking a more constructive approach for diffusing the ongoing crisis in Niger wherein soldiers have taken-over the government and captured the nation’s political leader. Mr. Wade is the appointed arbitrator for resolving the political unrest in the uranium-rich nation of Niger. He was recently appointed in this profile by the ECOWAS Commission (Economic Community of West African States) and he seems serious about finding a solution to Niger’s continuing political turbulence which has worsened since the governmental head, President Mamadou Tandja, was overthrown.

Talking to interviewers from Dakar, Mr. Wade insisted upon the need to fasten the efforts to ensure that civilian rule was returned to Niger. He was referring to the military coup or the ‘junta’ rule, tentatively referred to as the Supreme Council for the Restoration of Democracy that has suspended the constitution, bringing a sudden halt to the Niger’s civilian rule.

It is worthy highlighting that the coup responsible for displacing Mr. Tandja’s government was largely catalyzed by extreme public conflict which came to the fore when Mr. Tandja extended his rule beyond the stipulated term that came to its end in December. Many analysts believe that the ‘junta’ was partly instigated by the manner in which Mr. Tandja put forth a political referendum and then pushed it through in a seemingly manipulative manner to extend his term.

Speaking on behalf of Niger’s Supreme Council, Col. Abdul Karim Goukoye Karimou told The Wall Street Journal that there was a fair chance of elections being held within a “reasonable period” but couldn’t make a commitment regarding the precise scheduling of the elections. Col. Karimou seemed confident that the ‘junta’ would enjoy the support of the civilians. He further added that Mr. Tandja didn’t face any threat to his health, since he had access to the services of his personal doctor. Col. Abdul elaborated that the President is being currently held within military barracks, located near the capital city, and that his safety was a top priority.

Mr. Wade’s initiative to restore civilian rule in Niger has the support of many international organizations including the African Union and The European Union. Many other international bodies have criticized the coup, deeming it contradictory to the efforts of many African nations that are trying to graduate towards democratic rule. Mr. Wade explained that he would use his time in the Niger capital of Niamey to discuss matters with leading political parties and put forth a solution for ensuring that constitutional rule was restored through an unprejudiced, political referendum. He was confident of the military coup being a brief event, stating that he was confident of the soldiers retreating to their respective barracks.

Mr. Wade’s involvement in restoring constitutional rule in Niger isn’t the first time he has been involved in such a tense political environment. He had led a mediation in Mauritania too where the military officers had taken over the office of the elected president. After his intervention, elections were held in July wherein the coup’s leader, General Mohamed Abdel Aziz won over the presidential candidate.

The political turbulence in Niger is surging with some leaders of opposition parties expressing support for the military coup. Leader of the opposition party, Rassemblement Democratique Africaine, Abdoulaye Diori Hamani even plans to organize a pro-military march, expressing support of the opposition for the soldiers.

Though Niger’s political history shows many instances of military coups, overthrowing of the Tandja government is expected to lead the nation into one of its worst phases of political uncertainty and Mr. Wade’s efforts in resolving this crisis is being closely watched by political analysts.
