Hi everyone. I'm totally new to the whole concept of buying and selling domain names and I'm considering buying a certain .com name at Godaddy, but I'm wondering what other "extras" you guys go for when purchasing? I see they have "auto renew protection" and "certified domain" and this "protected registration" for $24.99....Is it a good idea to take all the bells and whistles offered? My idea (first and only one so far) is to do an erotic short story type of site, but something that would hopefully attract both men and women..nothing to mushy, romantic, fuzzy wuzzy that turns guys off, you know? So here is my biggest problem, I know NOTHING about building websites, zero And I have no idea if I should just buy the domain and park it somewhere till I figure out how to do it, or what the heck I should do...The name I have picked out is very much related to what my site would be about and it's an abbreviation+one word.com...I feel like I might have a fairly good idea here, considering I'm a newbie, but I don't know how the heck to get started. Any help and/or advice would be appreciated. Update: so I just went to name.com instead and bought my first 2 domain names, I guess basically because it was cheaper and they didn't confuse me with all sorts of add ons for extra $$. The names I bought are bjtales.com and eroticbj.com. Feel free to tell me if I'm sort of on the right track..or if I should just go away, forget about things like domain names and find something better to do with my free time lol.
The good thing is, is that right from the get go, you are talking about development, which makes for a refreshing change coming from a complete newbie - this is good. Now, the two names you bought, I personally don't know about that registrar, I never use them myself, not that I'm saying there's anything wrong with them, I just prefer to keep my number of registrars restricted to just a few of them, without getting bogged down with accounts everywhere scattered across the web. Personally, I don't think your domain names are much cop, but it should be ok. If you decide that you do not like them, you should be able to simply delete them within 5 days of registering them, and use the credit in your account to register something else. My preference would be for you to choose something a little more generic, two words, something that makes perfect sense, that people are highly likely to type in when looking for erotic stories. Everyone though has their personal preferences. At Godaddy, no you don't need all the whistles and bells. Frankly it's rather annoying registering names there, for all the blinkin pages you have to navigate just to get to the final checkout. It's like the Magic Roundabout in Swindon, Wiltshire, England (google it under images), you'll see and understand what I mean. On building a website, you could I guess just start off with something very simple, try out a WYSIWYG editor, (What You See Is What You Get) - have a look at http://www.sitespinner.com that's a very simple drag and drop website creator, reasonably priced with a free trial too and good tutorials to help you every step of the way. I'm sure others here can assist you with the rest or any other points you would like to raise. Wishing you all the best. Mark Magawr
both are short and easy to remember. i like bjtales more. Even if you park the site that doesn't mean ull start making money out of them right away.
Thanks for your input guys. I'll definitely be checking out the sites you listed, Magawr, once I get alittle more time. I definitely don't see this as a quick way to make some cash, and I'm looking at this as more of a long term investment. I'm going to be working on this in my free time and I know I have alot to learn about developing sites, getting traffic there, etc. I want to be able to get some nice quality sites together so that I can really maximize the profit, even if it takes a few years. One thing I do feel like maybe I shouldn't wait on though is trying to scoop up a few good .net domains. I know they're not worth as much as a good .com right NOW, but again, I'm looking at this long term. 5-10 years down the road and it could be a whole other story for good .net domains...or at least this is what my newbie mind is thinking lol. As far as parking, I guess the reason I'm thinking I should park the domains I just got is because right now, even though I know those 2 domain names are mine, it just feels like they're out there floating aimlessly around in cyberspace and if I don't have them "somewhere" they might float away on me...I know, I'm weird lol, but I just feel like I should do something with them till I can learn how to develop them.
I dont go with any of the GD extras. I find it extremely annoying the amount of upsells they throw in front of your face when you;re just wanting to buy a domain. Which is why i only use Namecheap now.... free WHOIS tops it off
I agree with him totally. I have had two domains with Godaddy for a year. Everything was fine. But I never purchased any extras. There is just no point to doing so if you ask me. All you need is a domain. Who cares about auto renew? Why waste money when you will always be alert enough to renew manually? There are many other features which are just bogus if you ask me. The only thing is that Godaddy is very good with psychology. They show you all those extras and tell you how much you are missing out on just to lure you into buying things. Heck, they go so far as to put a little note at the top of your account which says "You have missed out on so much cash" meaning all the "discounted" offers a person does not buy. So when a person sees that he is like "Oh Gosh, should have bought them." It is all to bait you into buying more than you need. So if you ask me. Avoid it like the plague.
Godaddy's always trying to upsell people some useless crap. Glad to see you choose Name.com which is cheaper & doesn't try to upsell you with millions of pages you have to go through to checkout your order.
Go Daddy is a great company though. Your user control panels are so easy to use. They also have great customer support. So they try to upsell, that's just business. Any other marketers in here use upselling? I bet your affiliate merchant's do. Sheree
