Can anyone give me sort of a submission 101 course real quick? When entering title, description, and keywords do I just pretty much enter the same thing that I have on my homepage (On-page SEO)?

Why do some submission services offer to place up to 10 different desciptions for you? Is it better to give a different description for each directory you submit to?

How effective is directory submission? Should I take the time to sit down one night and just submit to every single directory I can find?

What's the easiest/efficient way to submit? Are software programs useful? If so, which one do you recommend?

    Thanks!

Swedal, those articles did help answer a lot, thanks for that. However, reading your articles also brought me to a few more questions, lol......

You say not to use the same description as I did the last 10 directories, and that different descriptions will give better quality backlinks. However, in a description, isn't it best to give a full description of your site, and if so, how different should the descriptions be? Let me give an example..

Description #1: Men's blog about women, fitness, health, investing, cars, tech toys, and other men's interests.

Now this is what my site is all about. How can I possibly come up with a different description for hundreds, if not thousands of directories? Unless I change it up, and don't really put a very accurate description such as the following

Description #2: Men's online magazine for fitness

    #3: All about men's health

#4: Men's interests all in one spot

The above descriptions are all different and I could probably come up with a number of them, but they don't represent my site well. Maybe you can give me 3 or 4 examples of how you would do it?

Also, in your articles, you mention automated submission is out because of the fact that you don't want the same description for every directory. Are there no programs that allow you to use multiple descriptions?

    Hi Remix,

There are really limitless ways to write descriptive text. For example - Offering premium articles dealing with mens issues including women, health, fitness, investing, and the latest tech toys.

That is a quick one without seeing your site, but you get the idea. There are limitless ways to say nearly the same thing by varying the words up. You want to try to give the spiders something different and unique in the text to grab onto. I would like to day that all directory editors vary up the text of their submissions every time, but I know that only the quality sites do this.

There are a few good auto submitters and form fillers that do vary the text when submitting. I know that mikey1090 uses a very nice one which he could probably tell you more about. Thing is most of the good ones do cost. The one mikey uses for example I believe runs around $150.

I would say that to get the most benefit for directory links the description should be unique. Especially when submitting with a quality directory. Now when your submitting to thousands of free directories you need to realize that the link back for the most part is not going to be that useful even with good unique descriptions.

I submit to those free sites also, but I understand that the link back will not be overly useful in most cases anyway. The site might not even be there in 6 months and even if it is it may have gone paid and the free links were removed. There is alot of attrition in free directories.

Sorry buy I have to go xmas shopping now.... Have a great holiday season.

It will take you more than a night to do it all at once. With free directories it's not usually a great use of your time, more like a lottery. Some backlinks will be very valuable, whilst others will disappear before they get indexed, or the link won't even get reviewed. Most people submit alphabetically or by PR, but I would suggest submitting by age, on the basis that those directories that have been around the longest have more of a proven track record. I'm not sure where you would get a list sorted by age at the moment, however.

Using a semi-automatic approach with a form-filler and manual review. There are a few plug-ins for Firefox, or you could use AI Roboform. But you will need to check the submit page for unique guidelines, and to fill in captchas.
