Well first off, I'd upgrade to PHPBB 3.0 RC6. But in PHPBB 2, to add adsense just go into the template directory. It's been so long since I've used it, I can't give you exactly where it is, but should be a style or template folder with files labeled tpl, and there you can modify them.
