Create something of value and ask for an email address in return for the product.

Be aware that all emailing lists are not created equally. In fact, you will find it difficult to profit from most of them.

Most people that are dealing in lists provide old or unobtainable addresses. I have heard many stories about the futility of email lists purchased from elsewhere. The best email lists contain targeted customers who have asked to be included for further information. This does not come cheap.

For example, I was considering purchasing an email list from a reputed newspaper source - they were able to tell me how old the list was, what their interests and demographics were - and the cost was $250 for 1000.

    Quite right

Most of these emails have been scraped (illegally) from elsewhere. They are either out of date and not functioning or they have a very poor response rate. The best lists are ones where they have opted to receive information from you (therefore they are targeted to the information you are about to provide) or, failing that, have opted to receive third party / partner communications.

There are a lot of sites that specialize in mailing list provision! Do you need it for free?

There are a few "list" builders out there such as listdotcom, businessworldlist, downline builder direct, etc. which have free options but you are either going to pay for the lists or spend your time.

The best way is to use ezine advertising and advertize to their lists. This is a very cheap and targeted way to get to people.

You don't get a list... you build a list and this from the articles you promote. Search for an affiliate product in a niche you are passionate about. Create a squeeze page (webpage) with an opt-in (get an autoresponder) and then the list will start to built up. Of course you will need traffic to get on your webpage and this is all the secret of marketing. You will find some good products on search engin regarding list building.
    Good luck! :)

Give people a reason to signup for your list, then purchase advertisements in other related newsletters, etc. Or you can rent lists (not cheap) from places like http://www.returnpath.net Still these reputable list providers will not give you the list. They will send your E-mail to them. Which is why it is important to have your own signup form and build your own list.

Just purchasing lists of addresses and mailing to them might get you in trouble for spamming so be careful.

    Good luck :)

You must build your own email list, there really is no other way. It´s no point in buying leads because these people will not know who you are, they will no trust you and will certainly not buy from you.

I would definatly build my own list of email addresses because then you can be sure that people will be more likely to read the emails and maybe make a purchase since they have opted to receive emails from you. If you send emails to addresses purchased from elsewhere, even if they are targeted they still won't know who you are or trust you unless you have a global reputation like ebay. So making your own lists is always the best thing to do.

Your best bet is to build one from scratch. Sign up with an autoresponder service, such as Aweber or GetResponse. Build a "squeeze" page that offers subscribers an ebook or report in exchange for their e-mail address and first name.
