Newbie - Embedding video files on webpage? Help!

    Hi,

I'm a webdesigner but don't usually deal with video.

However, my client sent me a DVD with video files of a recent performance & he wants 'em streaming on the web by tomorrow.

The DVD has a directory with various files in it:

    VIDEO_TS.BUP
    VIDEO_TS.IFO
    VIDEO_TS.VOB
    VTS_01_0.BUP
    VTS_01_0.IFO
    VTS_01_0.VOB
    VTS_01_1.VOB

And I don't have the first idea what to do with them to get them in a format that's embeddable on a webpage (or even what format would be best for that).

Any help would be really appreciated!

    Thanks so much,
    Denise

First you have to convert them to format that we can use on web sites like wmv , flv , swf etc.

Then if file is big just split them to few files and use it as normal embedding code :)

Thanks kind of the cash, but that's just what I'm asking?

How do I convert all these odd files into a format that can stream on the web?

I also am not sure what you mean by "if the file is big just split them to a few files and use it as a normal embeddding code." I don't know how to do that or what a normal embedding code is. I am completely new at this.

    Thanks for your help.
    best,
    Denise

if the files in your dvd's directory are video_ts files, you are looking at a playable dvd, not a data dvd...basically this means you could watch that dvd in a dvd player.
The first thing you're gonna need to do is "rip" that dvd, creating video files you can store on your pc.(i assume your on a pc).
I am really only familiar with DVD ripping software for Mac's, but here is a wiki article that should help you if your on a pc http://www.wikihow.com/Rip-a-DVD

Hope this helps, feel free to send me a message if you need further help.

Hi webmarketjournal, thanks for your help.

I did go to the webpage you recommended, and downloaded the DVD Decrypter. I ran it, and it just copied the files on the DVD into another folder on my hard drive.

I could have done that myself, so I am pretty much back to square one.

I It's just one short video clip, so I don't really understand what all the individual files are for. Sorry if I am thick. I am just not getting it, I guess.

I have worked with mp3 files before (just one file to upload) - but I guess video is a lot different - I don't understand how to get all those video files into one file I can post to the web.

Thanks again. I really need all the help I can get here.

    cheers ~
    Denise

that decrypter is not just for copying files onto your desktop...it should be able to convert the video_ts files into video files such as .avi, .wmv, or .mov...you can't do anything with those files as they are now...they must be converted into a usable format...
Thats the first step, then you can upload them and put them on your site...

I am not sure how well that DVD Decrypter works (like I said, I am really only familiar with DVD ripping software for Mac) but it was the only free version for pc I found...I saw several for $30 or $40...you may need to find another program.
The basic point, though, is that you must convert that video_ts file into another format before you can use it.
You will end up with only 1 file...a .avi or .wmv or .mp4 or .mov or whatever format you prefer...
Then you can upload that file.

    Hi webmarketjournal,

Unfortunately this decrypter just rips the DVD files, doesn't offer any conversion functions. I'm sure I'm not missing something, because it is a very simple application - there aren't many options and no mention of other formats.

I guess I need to find some conversion software...

    Thanks ~
    cheers ~

Another question - is there one format that's better than others? This is my first time doing this, so I don't have any idea what is best.

    Thanks!

Sorry that program didn't work out...
If you go to Version Tracker and search for "dvd ripping"
you will find several options available for $30 or so.

As far as format, it depends a bit on what you are trying to do...but in general .mp4 is pretty good and is compatible with a huge amount of players (both mac and pc).
If you're familiar with pc's a windows movie (.wmv) might be easiest for you to deal with.
Converting any of these formats to a flash video might be the best option, but it adds a step and may make things a bit more complicated for you.
