Newbe to SEO how do I get started

Discussion in 'Search Engine Optimization' started by masseysmusic, Nov 3, 2009.

I am a small business owner with a music production company near Dallas. I have been using a PPC campaign or two and have gotten modest results at best. Plus the costs are somewhat prohibitive.

I would love to rank higher naturally, but I don't have the money to just turn it over to a SEO company. I consider myself somewhat computer savvy. How do I get started?

    Thanks ahead of time.

It appears that you have the word "music" in your URL. That's really good, always good to include your most searchable topic word in your website URL. Of course add lots of keywords, pick some obvious words, music, instruments, recording etc. and also some long tail keywords too like "music production Dallas". You can use the Google key word tool to see what has been searched recently and to gain some synonyms that you might not have thought of. Finally, write some articles about music and post them on ezine, Squidoo and any music forums you can find that will direct people back to your site. Oh, and if you have some relevant video of your services post it on You tube and your site. Oh... and get listed on the big online directories Google, Yahoo, Bing. That will get you started...

It has one of the worst designs I ever saw. Remove that slideshow and add some decent content. That is the first step you should take.

I would suggest first learning to crawl then walk then run when learning search engine optimization. It's not going to happen overnight. Learning SEO is a rather lengthy process. And I wouldn't experiment with your own site until you have at least the basics down.

The biggest challenge when learning about SEO is figuring out how to wade through the 99.99% of crappy advice that you'll find online in blogs and forums like this to find the 0.01% of gold contained in various posts. So before taking anything you read online too seriously, I suggest learning the basics elsewhere.

    But that's just my $0.02USD worth. ;)

Looks like you need more keyword targeted content. Build lots of backlinks going back to your site, just to start. By the way that huge slideshow with the grainy pictures needs to go. :)

As a newbie just start building backlinks by blog commenting and forum posting and post quality content too
