New website, connection error with 'dbconn'

I recently purchased a website. I took over the cpanel, changed the password, and the domain name was sent to my account on the same registrar. I changed that password as well. The next thing I knew the website wouldn't show up correctly. When you go there, this error is all that appears:

dbconn: mysql_connect: Access denied for user '*****_*****'@'localhost' (using password: YES)

How could such a small change create such a problem? I have no clue what happened. The only other thing i've played with is the nameservers. Could that cause an issue?

This is specifically a mysql user access issue. I would add a new user to the database and use the new login and password on the website. This database username / password is different than the cpanel username / password.
