How can we come up with a reason when you give us little to no information about your website(s) and what you're doing with them?

If you haven't made any significant on site changes, the likelihood is that the most recent Google update has penalized your site for over optimization. Ask yourself honestly- what link building techniques have you been using? Then research your backlink profile to see if you can find any "bad" links which can be removed.

Google is all about diversity and quality. There is definitely still a market for automated links in any SEO campaign- but these should now be used as tier 1 and 2 links to ensure you aren't putting your money (main) site(s) at risk. One example of creating tiered links is to create Web 2.0 Properties and point lower quality links at these, which in turn link to your money site(s). This way, you are still receiving link juice, but your business is protected from any penalties Google could impose.
