New to wordpress - would like to alter header size

Hi - I have set up a wordpress blog using slr lounge theme, since its my first attempt and i dont understand CSS/coding yet. What I would like to do though is somehow alter the header as all my images need to be sized 1000 x 325 and particularly landscape formats are distorted due to resizing. I have looked in flashfader which was where i found the above size. Does anyone know if I can make it larger etc? Or perhaps this is a photoshop question if i am incorrectly resizing. Im a bit lost on this one and it would be great if you had a few pointers.

you can use thimthumb to resize images, basically its a little php tool that will resize your images in the blog automatically in some cases, it wont disrupt the images in terms of stretching it for example, you can follow this tutorial to add timthumb capability to your theme (if it doesnt have it already)

I'm not 100% sure I follow what it is you want to do. Are you saying the header image gets in the way or it's too small or...? Generally speaking it isn't a good idea to alter the theme files unless you absolutely have to since when it comes time to updating WP everything can break, usually at a most inopportune time!

So if you are trying to display images and they have to be large, and that's what's causing the issues you are experiencing, then perhaps it just requires some image resizing?

If what you're trying to do is use something like flashfader in your header...?

Feel free to shoot me a PM if you want me to have a look.

thanks everyone for your replies, and links to tutorials. I have a landscape image for example and I resize it in photoshop to say 1000 x 325 to fill the header size for maximum impact. Obviously a normal landscape size nis not this size therefore the photo now looks stretched and distorted. ( I resized in photoshop). I was wondering if there was a procedure to resize and maintain the proportions?. Flashfader is already in my theme, i would like my header to have 4 images and each opening one after the other slowly. Sorry for my basic explanation but I have only just started my WP blog and its way over my head. lol

In case anyone else comes across this thread...

Fix: Images required for the theme need to be approx. 980px by 340px which required cropping of the pics to those dimensions in Photoshop otherwise images get automatically resized (and therefore distorted) by the Flashfader plugin that is needed by the theme.
