Well, you should start with a HTML, to do the structure of your website, then PHP and MySQL for your site functionallity, and then CSS and Photoshop for your site design. You can also include JavaScript.

If you want you can develop your sites using Flash or FLex, but I think HTML, PHP, MySQL, CSS and Photoshop are the best! :)

Look into getting some free software to work on them...

Search google for NVU, it's a good software application for free.
also search for Firezilla... it's a freeware FTP application.

There are a lot of books available, and it is hard to recommend any single one, as they often use very different techniques to try and teach what they are preaching.

My way of learning both PHP and MySQL, and before that, HTML and CSS, has been to first figure out what I want to do, and why, and then implement that what and why into how - ie. I search for solutions when I have a problem I want to solve.

Best way, in my opinion, is to have a clear goal as to what you want to achieve. For instance, making a webpage just for making a webpage will not be a good incentive for very long. If you, on the other hand, create something for something you're interested in, then the incentive will be there even after some time.

Say, for instance, that you enjoy books, and that you have an extensive book collection. There are plenty of free book-collection software out there, but how about sitting down and making your own collection software, using PHP and MySQL? Making something like that is a good learning experience. You can start out simple with a form where you can add books you've bought or read, and then you will have to make some search-function, and maybe different sorting views and listings of the books already registered.

Then, you can add pictures of the books' covers, ratings, maybe reviews etc. etc. - there is no limit to what you can find room for, really.

I, personally, find this a very good way of learning. Have some defined goals that gives you something to strive for.

There are a lot of information available on Google, and there are an abundance of forums like this one we are on right now. Usually you can find the answers online, as long as you know what to search for (that part comes with learning and experience).

Perhaps I m a bit confused. I have worked a lot on HTML using frontpage, dreamweaver, and now i wana do something in PHP. But even then i m not sure what to do. I dont have a plan for my website. I dont know what is best now a days? I would be very grateful if any one could suggest which field should i choose? I mean should i go for a blog, directory, a bookmarking site or anything else?

What do you want to do with your page? If you're gonna make it to make money, you need something unique. If you are making it for your own benefit, I'd say go for a blog. It can also be used to make money and promote yourself and your opinions.

There isn't a universal key for making a popular website, therefore I suggested having a goal first, before you start building the page.

These are all types of sites where theres already ready made scripts for them, if you are looking at creating something with php, why not go for something um not quite unique, but different.
